Hardcover. Condición: Good Minus. First Edition. Scarce, Rare Book. Famous American Aritist--Frederick Waugh's children's masterpiece---that has gone undiscovered for generations. The book is 9 1/2" x 12 1/2". Oblong folio, 58 pp. Original blue cloth, front cover pictorially stamped in red and black and lettered in white. Fronti…spiece and 7 full-color plates. 20 black and white plates with marginal decorations, illustrations and initials on all text pages. Wear to extremities, fading to cloth, and the corners are frayed and bumped. Interior textblock mildly age toned - but the plates are all present, some of the pages inside have been taped at the gutter to prevent them from coming loose. No inscriptions. Frederick Judd Waugh (1861-1940) was one of America's most renowned painters of the sea. Born in New Jersey, he studied art in Philadelphia and Paris, lived with his wife on the Channel island of Sark for several years, and then settled in the artists' colony of Provincetown at the end of Cape Cod; he spent his final years back in New Jersey. Waugh first visited Monhegan Island, ME around 1911 at the age of 50. In 1914, he was inspired by the twisted fragments of ancient spruce trees on the island and began drawings for his children's book The Clan of Munes. A friend of Waugh's, Mrs. Henry Lang, had an extensive Native American collection of artifacts donated to the Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey close to where he lived. This is probably the source for Waugh's use of Tlingit and Haida Indian totems and dress in the book. "This astonishing and rather disturbing fantasy is clearly based on Northwest Indian myths and art. It tells of the creation by a wizard of a race of bizarre beings who resemble both trees and marine growths, and it is hard to say whether the text or the illustrations are weirder. Whatever else it may be, it is a masterpiece of American illustration." Melrose books described this edition this way: "This book was published in 1916 to critical acclaim as an art book for children - it did not sell well. Although the illustrations were beautiful the story was difficult to read and World War I was looming. Waugh bought back the remaining copies from the publisher and as a result very few copies remain today. On Monhegan Island, Waugh was referred to by other artists as "the Wizard" for how well he could paint the sea. He also referred to himself as "the Wizard's historian" in reference to the Wizard he wrote into the story The Clan of Munes." Email us for photos, we ship fast. Waugh, Frederick J. (ilustrador).
