Softcover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. This 9.25 x 11.5 inch, 30 page softcover booklet is the 1969 printing from the United States Government Printing Office, Washington. Apparently this is the first edition of this work. This paper-covered item is in at least very good condition with the stapled paper cover showing only a bit of wear at the corners. There is a series of small spots on the rear lower corner but beyond that the cover and interior text pages show little sign of handling and time wear. The glossy paper used for the text gives a high quality photographic result for the illustrations and this work describes John Wesley Powell's anthropological field work from his Colorado River expeditions. The authors of the paper review the field work in light of today's science of anthropology and the paper is again highlighted by numerous b&w photographs and maps. 30 pages.…

Don D. Fowler spent over 40 years at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), serving as the Mamie Kleberg Professor of Historic Preservation. Robert C. Euler chaired the anthropology departments at both Northern Arizona University and the University of Utah, and served as the president of Prescott College. Catherine S. Fowler taught alongside her husband at the University of Nevada, Reno from 1964 to 2007, where she became Professor Emerita. Authored by anthropologists Don D. Fowler, Robert C. Euler, and Catherine S. Fowler, the 30-page paper reviews Powell's intermittent field studies conducted between 1868 and 1880. It highlights his interactions with Numic-speaking groups (such as the Southern Paiute, Ute, and Havasupai) and includes extracts from his original notes on Native origins, customs, and practices. Additionally, the paper features a brief overview of Grand Canyon regional archaeology, including sites identified along Powell's river routes. John Wesley Powell (March 24, 1834 September 23, 1902)[was an American geologist, U.S. Army soldier, explorer of the American West, professor at Illinois Wesleyan University, and director of major scientific and cultural institutions. He is famous for his 1869 geographic expedition, a three-month river trip down the Green and Colorado rivers, including the first official U.S. government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. Powell was appointed by US president James A. Garfield to serve as the second director of the U.S. Geological Survey (18811894) and proposed, for development of the arid West, policies that were prescient for his accurate evaluation of conditions. He also spent time among the Native Peoples of the Colorado Plateau and wrote an influential classification of North American Indian languages. Two years prior to his service as director of the U.S. Geological Survey, he had become the first director of the Bureau of Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution where he supported linguistic and sociological research and publications. He was also the first president of the Anthropological Society of Washington, founded in 1879. Powell was in favor of developing agriculture on water-rich public lands, leaving the rest for grazing animals. From 1894 to 1899, Powell held a post as lecturer on the History of Culture in the Political Science department at the Columbian University in Washington, D.C.
