Zu groß erscheinen die Unterschiede zwischen den herrscherzentrierten und konsensorientierten Ständezusammenkünften des Mittelalters oder der Frühneuzeit und den aus allgemeinen, freien und gleichen Wahlen hervorgegangenen modernen Parteienparlamenten mit ihrem institutionalisierten Dissens zwischen Regierung und Opposition. Die aktuelle Forschung beginnt jedoch auf die Kontinuitäten zwischen alten und neuen Versammlungen zu achten, die sich insbesondere im Bereich der politischen Kultur zeigen. Selbst moderne demokratische Staatswesen stehen in mancher Hinsicht noch 'im Schatten des Königs' (Philip Manow). Tatsächlich finden sich bis heute zahlreiche Weiterführungen parlamentarischer Frühformen, die vor 1789 entstanden sind. Ein wichtiger Bereich der Kontinuität ist die bereits im Spätmittelalter hochentwickelte Redekultur ständischer Versammlungen, ebenso deren Visualisierung und räumliche Inszenierung. Diese Aspekte untersucht der von Jörg Feuchter und Johannes Helmrath herausgegebene Sammelband. Er entstand aus der Zusammenarbeit des von Helmrath geleiteten Forschungsprojektes 'Parlamentsoratorik' an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin und der Kommission für Geschichte des Parlamentarismus und der politischen Parteien. Die 16 Beiträge fragen nach möglichen Vergleichskriterien zwischen älteren parlamentarischen Versammlungen und modernen Parlamenten. Sie liefern zugleich epochenübergreifende, exemplarische Analysen, von den französischen Ständeversammlungen des Spätmittelalters über die portugiesischen Cortes des 17. Jahrhunderts bis zum deutschen Reichstag des 19. Jahrhunderts. Ein thematischer Schwerpunkt liegt auf dem englischen Parlament. Es werden aber auch räumlich entfernte Versammlungen wie die Loya Jirga Afghanistans und die russische Duma von 1905/1906 vorgenommen. Die Medialisierung und politische Ikonographie nehmen ebenso zentralen Raum ein wie die Inhalte, Kontexte und Modi parlamentarischen Redens. Alle Beiträge gehen auf eine internationale Konferenz zurück, die im Juli 2010 in Berlin stattgefunden hat.
