Government armories were unable to supply the additional millions of rifles required. The collecting of these rifles has been discussed by Feiler and Canfield. Most of what these writers had to say concerns the Springfirld Armory '03, with relatively little comment about the Rock Island Arsenal version of the same rifle. Most of Rock Island's activities in making the '03 were the same as Springfield's, and the parts were interchangeable. There is no reason to repeat here all that has been written about the Springfield. This book is primarily to identify and discuss aspects of the Rock Island '03 whch set it apart from the Springfield.
