While the design for hydraulic and structural considerations is important to maintain a safety envir…onment, the uncertainties of hydraulic predictions may often lead to overdosing resulting in additional costs, or possible failure. The most common cause of bridge failures is the local scour located around bridge piers; it is also great danger during floods and in the event of major environmental crises. It is important for the designer of the bridge foundation to understand the local scour phenomenon as this explains the maximum possible scours around bridge piers and abutments in order to create a safe and economic design. This research-study validates and explains a 3D computational fluid dynamic model(SSIIM) for local scours, by changing the pile numbers and spacing of pile groups for both the longitudinal and the transversal directions and comparing the scour hole depth for each case to have a better understanding for the effect of the pile groups arrangements on the scour around bridge piers. 140 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation (MWRI), Egypt has constructed various hydraulic structures and facilities along the Nile River to control the release of water in according to planned water demand. Barrages have been b…uilt on the Nile River to regulate the water distribution and control the water flow to maximize profitability and minimize the water losses. To maintain the efficiency of the water distribution along the river, the MWRI is replacing the old barrages in which their life time is over by new ones. During testing the New Esna and Naga Hammadi Barrages designs and their hydraulic performance on a physical model, it was observed that the scour occurred immediately downstream the stilling basin and exceeded the expected values. In both cases significant design modifications have been introduced using trial and error based on expert's opinion. Different shapes of stilling basins were tested in order to investigate the performance of stilling basins effect on submerged hydraulic jump. The proposed designs were classified into four groups and each group consisted of two or three designs. 208 pp. Englisch.

In this study, an improved design for irrigation pipeline networks is investigated.Basic partial dif…ferential equations based on one-dimensional homogenous flow model are formulated and solved by the method of characteristics. The differential equations of momentum and continuity are developed for solving transient problem. For transient condition caused by pump failure, four different scenarios were considered to study the impact of column separation of the pipelines system. These scenarios are the steady state condition, transient condition without protection, transient condition with air vessel as a protection and transient condition with air vessel and two surge towers as a protection. Also, the impact of changing diameter and wall thickness of pipes, changing material type and polar moment of inertia of the pump on the magnitude of the maximum pressure heads and column separation were included in the study. The Water Hammer Software 'Wanda V3.30' was applied and the results were graphically presented for different relationships. 184 pp. Englisch.

Until recently, few investigations are available to estimate the equilibrium scour at bridge abutments in cohesive soil. The present study has two main goals. The first is to study the flow field around a vertical bridge abutment for sandy soil and clayey soil. The second is to develop scour prediction formulas to predict scour pattern at a vertical bridge abutment for sandy soils and for clayey soils. The study also aims to investigate the difference between the scour pattern for sandy soils and that for clayey soils. A computer program is developed to get the equilibrium scour pattern around the bridge abutment and the development of scour depth with time. Diverse techniques we…re used to affect the flow pattern. Physical work was carried out to investigate and to evaluate the groins ability to protect the opposite bank of the diversion channel from erosion. A package of 2-d mathematical model based on finite element theory was used in attempt to simulate and predict the flow pattern surrounding a group of groins. The simulation is focused on the study of velocity in the longitudinal and transverse directions. Also, the working length of each group, the water level fluctuation and the geometry of scour holes were investigated.
