Al retirar la tierra que lo cubría lograron desenterrar una tinaj…a herméticamente cerrada. Contenía un conjunto de polvorientos libros de papiro encuadernados en piel de cabra. En total se trataba de 13 códices que que recopilan 52 textos, la mayoría de ellos, dessconocidos hasta entonces, estaban relacionados con la corriente mística y filosófica del gnosticismo.
