Prior to the early studies on its th anatomy and physiology in the 18 century, the thymus was believed to perform - usual and curious functions such as purification of the nervous system, providing a protective cushion for the vasculature of the superior mediastinum, fetal nouri- ment, or more spiritual roles such as being the seat of the soul, among others. D- th ing the 19 century important anatomical/physiological studies took place focusing on the role of the thymus in pathological conditions. However, it was not until the th middle of the 19 century that a more comprehensive analysis of the role of the thymic gland and its role in pathogenesis began to emerge. Currently, while the knowledge gained on the diverse aspects of the thymic gland has furthered our understanding of its role in a gamut of processes, more knowledge is still being sought, and by no means is a full understanding of the gland's physi- ogy and pathology complete. Different aspects, including its purported endocrine function, its association with other autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus erythematosus, among others, are under evaluation and research.

Due realtà suggestive, complesse, con numerosi punti di contatto e che si sono sviluppate ed intrecciate nell'arco dei secoli. La Medicina ha affascinato gli artisti fin dall'antichità, quando era connotata da una valenza magico-rituale, per poi diventare motivo di ispirazione costante nelle epoche successive grazie al forte impatto che questa esprimeva nella realtà di tutti i giorni. Quando parliamo di Medicina intendiamo tutto quanto comprenda in genere la pratica medica, un campo estremamente complesso per la presenza di numerosi elementi che lo compongono, rappresentati dal paziente, dal medico, dalla malattia, dalla visita medica e dalla terapia: tutti temi che vengono sistematicamente interpretati con grande interesse da parte degli artisti. Tuttavia il rapporto tra Medicina ed Arti Figurative non si esaurisce con la semplice rappresentazione di argomenti medici in senso stretto; altri contenuti di grande interesse possono essere motivo di considerazione, come la convivenza dell'artista con la propria malattia, le figure dei medici artisti, l'utilizzo delle arti figurative in campo diagnostico, terapeutico, riabilitativo. Date queste premesse si comprende quanto possa essere ampia, articolata, composita la relazione tra questi due mondi. Sono numerose le monografie che trattano del rapporto tra Medicina ed Arti Figurative, quasi tutte incentrate sulle varie raffigurazioni delle malattie create dagli artisti. Noi con questo lavoro abbiamo voluto discostarci un poco da questa impostazione, trattando comunque in un capitolo piuttosto esteso le cosiddette "malattie d'autore", ma dedicando altro spazio alle rappresentazioni artistiche di temi e soggetti inquadrabili nella realtà della medicina, dai luoghi di cura alle figure degli operatori, dai "santi della salute" ai ciarlatani, dal paziente alla visita medica, dalla terapia alla lezione accademica. Un capitolo a parte è dedicato ai pazienti illustri, a quei personaggi storici rilevanti di cui abbiamo ritratti evocativi di una determinata malattia, da Erasmo da Rotterdam a San Francesco d'Assisi a Monna Lisa, Nicolò Paganini, Ludwig van Beethoven, Sergej Rachmaninov per citarne i più famosi. Un capitolo sicuramente innovativo è quello che affronta il problema di come la malattia possa incidere in senso negativo o anche paradossalmente positivo nel lavoro di un artista. Da Giorgio de Chirico a Claude Monet, da Edgar Degas a Paul Klee, da Edvard Munch a Vincent van Gogh la storia è ricca di maestri in cui la patologia ha condizionato qualità e quantità della loro produzione. Gli ultimi due Capitoli sono dedicati rispettivamente alle figure dei medici artisti, di cui abbiamo numerosi ed illustri esempi, ed al tema dell'Arteterapia, approccio metodologico di recente istituzione, volto ad acquisire importanti risultati in campo diagnostico, terapeutico, riabilitativo. Il volume si conclude con una domanda che rimane come sospesa, se cioè ci sarà ancora spazio nei prossimi anni per continuare la feconda interrelazione tra queste due realtà, considerando che tanto la Medicina quanto le Arti Figurative sono in una fase di tumultuosa evoluzione sull'onda delle nuove tecniche e tecnologie. Il lavoro è dedicato sia agli studenti in Medicina ed alla classe medica in generale, sia ai cultori dell'arte, ma anche a coloro che, numerosissimi, pur non essendo addetti ai lavori, si sentano attratti dall'intreccio tra questi due universi di grande fascin.
