Collana a cura di Franco Montanari). «Sai che a lungo ho esaminato quel famoso aforisma: "quanto ai dolori agli occhi, il bere vino puro oppure il bagno o l'impacco o il salasso o il… purgante li sciolgono", e che in base alla precisione in altri luoghi - la precisione di Ippocrate! -, confidavo che anche in questo passo non si dicesse né qualcosa di falso né qualcosa di impossibile; e che questo era ciò che mi stimolava alla ricerca, fino a che non fossi riuscito a trovare il modo di specificare anche questa via di Ippocrate, quando e come in ciascuno dei casi detti bisogna servirsene». La fedeltà a Ippocrate è una costante nella biografia di Galeno. Si può anzi dire che tutto il suo esercizio di medico e scienziato miri a verificare e attualizzare l'insegnamento del padre della medicina. A questo scopo Galeno fa ugualmente uso di ragionamento e metodo dimostrativo, di esame ed esegesi degli scritti ippocratici, ma senza rinunciare all'osservazione empirica della Natura, quale essa si manifesta: nelle crasi dei corpi, nelle stagioni dell'anno, nelle piante e negli altri ingredienti officinali. Così l'aspetto 'biologico' della storia naturale nei libri III e IV, qui per la prima volta editi criticamente e tradotti in italiano (dopo i libri I e II, pubblicati nel 2018 in questa collana), porta con sé anche quello 'autobiografico', poiché la scoperta, la raccolta, l'ordinamento e lo studio di tutti quanti i dati essenziali per la filosofia naturale e la pratica terapeutica furono operazioni compiute da Galeno nel corso della sua lunga vita. O sétimo volume é ilustrado no texto com gravuras que formam um atlas de cirurgia, apresentando ligamentos de fracturas, amputações e correcções de membros através de tracção em máquinas. Todas as 13 partes têm numerações próprias, o respectivo colófon indica o código dos cadernos e apresenta novamente a marca do impressor que consta nos frontispícios, que apresentam uma magnífica portada com cenas médicas representando personalidades contemporâneas de Galeno, identificadas com os respectivos nomes, estando Galeno presente em todas elas, excepto no ?Patris Insomnium?, em que se encontra representado o Deus Romano da cura, Aesculapius.
