Shifting attention from the area of initial pathology to the supposedly "intact" brain represents a novel approach, and mounting evidence indicates that the brain undergoes changes at molecular, cellular and circuitry levels when pain is untreated for several months. Further research in this area should lead to an understanding of the mechanisms which lead to development of a pain "biomarker" for diagnostic purposes, as well as new therapies that target the brain via surgical or technological approaches. Chronic Pain and Brain Abnormalities includes evidence for pain-related changes in the brain in human patients and in animal models. Data at the molecular, cellular and circuitry levels is integrated, and it is the novel synthesis of these data that is emphasized.
