Barrel ist eine Art in den Boden gegrabenes, überdimensioniertes, begehbares Fass, mit scheinbar wild übereinander gelegten Fenstern und Fensterrahmen überkuppelt und innen mit Brettern aus Lärchenholz ausgekleidet. Mit der dauerhaften Installation setzt Kawamata seine Recherchen zur gebauten Umwelt, zu temporären oder permanenten Behausungen wie den Dwellings fort. Die roh wirkende Konstruktion neben dem Apartmenthaus und den umliegenden Bauten der Nachbarschaft erscheint als optische Irritation, die auf das Spannungsverhältnis zwischen dem Perfekten und dem Prekären, zwischen Konstruktion und Dekonstruktion verweist, die der gebauten Umwelt immer eigen ist, aber auch auf das Verhältnis von Architektur und Kunst. Der performance-artige Aufbauprozess, zentraler Bestandteil von Kawamatas Arbeit, wurde vom Fotografen Gian Marco Castelberg in stimmungsvollen Bildern dokumentiert, Skizzen aus dem Archiv von Tadashi Kawamata und Referenzprojekte stellen das Werk in Bezug zum gedanklichen Universum des Künstlers.
