Book's cover design in red & black by artist Leonid Nikitin (1896-1942) is considered on of the best examples of Russian Constructivism. A classic of Russian avant-garde writing, collection of four theoretical articles written by Boris Arvatov between 1921 and 1923 focusing on the aims of Proletkult and the need to develop a proletarian point of view on contemporary art trends. Here Arvatov elucidates the difference between early avant-garde movements, including Futurism, and productivist Constructivism. He challenges the validity of easel art and proclaims the "productivist" view that artists should enter directly into industry to produce formally expedient and socially useful objects. In this case an aesthetic goal of art shifts to a factory noise and eliminates the opposition of art and life. The idea of "Productive Art" was developed by Arvatov also in his later works. Boris Arvatov (1896-1940) is best known as an art historian and critic, active theorist and ideologist of Proletkult, major proponent of "Productive Art", and a prominent contributor to LEF (the journal of the Soviet Union's avant-garde movement 'Left Front of the Arts').
