He was a fearless fighter for human and democratic rights especially for the poor and marginalized. He was instrumental in setting up the Committee for the Protection of Democratic Rights and the Indian Association of People's Lawyers, which was perhaps the first network of people's lawyers in the country. He also pioneered and spearheaded the setting up of people's tribunals to investigate atrocities which were either sponsored or abetted by state agencies. He did all this, despite his physical handicap. This book containing his writings over his career, provides a good insight into the thinking and ideology of our beloved Sabby. It will undoubtedly be very valuable, especially for young lawyers interested in rights lawyering. Prashant Bhushan, one of the foremost public interest lawyers in the Supreme Court of India. P.A. Sebastian, human rights defender, housing rights activist and labour lawyer, all rolled into one, was a selfless pillar of strength in the legal battles of the poor and the downtrodden against an oppressive system. He worked with us closely for years to ensure the rights of slum dwellers and the homeless are protected. His articles and writings will give us strength for the long and unfinished fight for justice in our unequal world. Shabana Azmi, one of the finest Indian actresses, a well-known public figure, and a committed social activist. P. A. Sebastian was not only a great civil liberties lawyer and humanist but a dear friend who fought all my court cases against film censorship in its myriad forms, for whatever little money we could gather, or completely pro bono. I am thrilled that Bernard D'Mello has meticulously collected all his invaluable writings so they may be found in one consolidated book. It is an invaluable resource both for human rights advocates and students of the political history of modern India. Anand Patwardhan, one of India's outstanding documentary filmmakers. Pellisary Anthony Sebastian (1938-2015) was a people's lawyer and human-rights activist, General Secretary of the Committee for the Protection of Democratic Rights, Mumbai, for over three decades, Principal Secretary of the Indian People's Human Rights Commission, and one of the founders and leading lights of the Indian Association of People's Lawyers and the International Association of People's Lawyers. The Fight to Win Rights is a collection of Selected Writings of P.A. Sebastian, penned in the corridor of time between March 1980 and January 2011, with a thoughtful introduction by Bernarnd D'Mello. It is a profoundly upsetting characterisation of the Indian judicial system in so far as the exploited classes, the oppressed castes, the oppressed nationalities, women, Muslims, and other religious minorities, and Adivasis are concerned. Coming in these dark times when political forces wedded to an 'Indian variant of Nazism' are in power, when human-rights activists are subjected to legal persecution under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, this collection of Sebastian's writings could not have been more to-the-point and to-the-purpose.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Cardiac disease complicating pregnancy is present in a relatively small number of women; however, it accounts for a disproportionate share of maternal morbidity and mortality, especially in developing/emerging countries. The prevalence of cardiac disease in pregnancy is increasing and there are multiple underlying etiologies with wide-ranging severity. Normal adaptions during pregnancy often further challenge already compromised anatomic and physiologic compensatory mechanisms of the cardiovascular system, increasing the risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. In this Element, the authors describe how these changes alter nonpregnant physiology with a variety of preexisting and newly diagnosed cardiac conditions. Maternal and fetal risks are reviewed. Diagnosis and management, from before conception through the postpartum period including appropriate contraception, is discussed. The goal of this review is to increase understanding of the importance of cardiac disease in pregnancy and encourage high-quality multidisciplinary care, and thus improve maternal and fetal outcomes.

Bernard D'Mello sets out the story of its origins and uneven development, in historical context. The armed struggle lives on because the conditions that gave rise to it not only persist, but are yet more severe. To understand the present and future of India, this story is essential. And Bernard D'Mello's brilliant account has no equal."-John Mage, International LawyerAlthough the 1967 revolutionary armed peasant uprising in Naxalbari, at the foot of the Indian Himalayas, was brutally crushed, the insurgency gained new life elsewhere in India. In fact, this revolt has turned out to be the world's longest-running "people's war," and Naxalbari has come to stand for the road to revolution in India. What has gone into the making of this protracted Maoist resistance? Bernard D'Mello's fascinating narrative answers this question by tracing the circumstances that gave rise to India's "1968"decade of revolutionary humanism and those that led to the triumph of the "1989" era of appallingly unequal growth condoned by Hindutva-nationalism, the Indian variant of Nazism. Will what remains of India's continuing "1968" bring twenty-first-century "New Democracy" to the collective agenda? Or will the ongoing regression of "1989" lead the way to full-blown semi-fascism and sub-imperialism? India after Naxalbari is far more than a simple history of the ongoing Naxalite/Maoist resistance; it is a deeply passionate and informed work that not only captures the essence of modern Indian history but also tries to comprehend the present in the context of that history - so that the oppressed can exercise their power to influence its shape and outcome.
