First published in Great Britain in 2015 by Pen & Sword Books Ltd, Barnsley. 301 pages, plus several pages showing charts/maps, all intact and nice tight binding. Tiny mark to side edge of papers, like a small thumb mark. These thought provoking studies, by arguably the twentieth century's finest naval historian, together form an arc that spans the years from one naval crisis in WWI to another in the war that followed. The first essay is a stimulating reappraisal of the naval attack on the Dardanelles in 1915, the success of which would have perhaps knocked Turkey out of the war and made the disastrous Gallipoli campaign that followed completely unnecessary. Marder then goes on to elucidate what the Royal Navy did and not learn from the First World War and how that influenced the conduct of the Second. His analysis of the 1935-6 Ethiopian Crisis, which looks at whether military aggression can be countered by sanctions, is particularly pertinent today, while "Winston is Back" is a compelling defence of Churchill after his return to the Admiralty. The last and major part of the book is a study of the dreadful task undertaken by Force H to shell and sink the French warships at Oran in 1940, to keep them out of German control; using recollections from both sides this is a particularly gripping and horrific narrative. …
