L'originalité de ce livre tient en ce que l'auteur analyse différents types de réponses parmi les plus représentatives de notre époque en précisant leurs limites. Certaines d'entre elles sont rejetées car elles ne s'appliquent qu'au Juif contemporain comme s'il existait une " date de naissance " de l'individu juif. La réponse qu'il privilégie devrait satisfaire à la fois la raison et la grande majorité de ceux qui se disent Juifs. Elle fait une part très large à l'histoire du peuple hébreu, depuis les temps bibliques jusqu'à nos jours car, pour l'auteur, la définition du juif ne saurait être construite ailleurs que dans la totalité de l'histoire. Le titre ne doit pas tromper. La bar-mitsvah est un point de départ, celui d'une réflexion sur l'identité de l'homme juif, non - comme on le croit malheureusement trop souvent - le simple aboutissement d'un enseignement de type religieux.
