Das wachsende Interesse an der Wiederentdeckung und Neuinterpretation des spirituellen Erbes der Menschheit kann kaum an dem vorübergehen, was wir unter islamischer Mystik zu verstehen haben. Zu ihr zählen große, wenn auch bei uns mitunter unbekannte Namen wie Attar, al-Ghazzali, Mansur al-Hallaj, Ibn Arabi u.v.a.m., vor allem aber der große Dichter und Heilige persisch-türkischer Provenienz, Maulana Rumi. Die vorliegende Studie porträtiert sein Leben und ordnet ihn in die Entwicklungsgeschichte der islamischen Mystik ein. Sie setzt ihn aber vor allem in Vergleich zu Leben und Werk des indischen Mystikers und Heiligen Sri Ramakrishna, zu dem hin sie die Entwicklungslinien in der indischen Geistesentwicklung nachzeichnet. Und hier liegt die Besonderheit dieser Untersuchung: Sie liefert den Beweis, daß Sufismus und Bhakti, die islamische Mystik und die Religion der Göttlichen Liebe in Indien, wesentliche Züge gemeinsam haben. Der Leser gewinnt ein neues Verhältnis zur islamischen Religiosität, nimmt Einblick in das Werden der volkstümlichen indischen Liebesreligion (Bhakti-Kultur) und findet neue Zugänge zu ihm vertrauten Texten indischer Philosophie wie der Bhagavadgita. Über den Verfasser: I.H. Azad Faruqi studierte an der Alighar Muslim University, an der Universität von Delhi, an der Temple University in Philadelphia (USA), an der Punjabi University in Patiala und an der Jamia Millia Islamia (New Delhi), an der er auch als Lehrer tätig war.
