It is a world built up in careful detail, a complex, nuanced world that contains both neighbourly solidarity, but also the dividing gradations of class, skin-colour and occupation; a world where women can be treated as beasts of burden, where 'outside' children suffer emotional abuse, but where men like her uncle are shown behaving with great tenderness towards children. Against the solidity of this world, part two, 'Exiled Musings', contrasts the nightmarish, temporariness of Caribbean migrant life in the USA, a people 'orphaned from our homes'. Here, Weir-Soley brings the realities of the travails of young black men with the law, black on black violence, crack and HIV/Aids into sharp and often angry focus. But in the final parts, 'Heartwars' and 'Incantations', we see the struggles to rebuild family and respect, and the capacity for joy and sensuality, the resilience and spirituality of a people who never lose their sense of God's grace.

Beyond the self, is an acknowledgement of the condition of the tribe through the time that reaches down into the past centuries of Black suffering, that leaves the poet wondering Perhaps we are soul-tired,/ and stay down longer/ after being knocked to the ground. But time can heal too, when with a once estranged father, like dew my outrage evaporates/ in your sun-hot love.There are the compromises to make, as in the poem Let the Dead Stay Buried, which acknowledges the inevitably different relationships of Black people to the past, where your uncomplicated island woman has to decide whether to risk a sensuously satisfying relationship or be true to the knowledge of the deadly history hidden in my depths. There is pain here a brother in agony from sickle cell, and multiple deaths but there is also the rich humour of a mother who gives notoriously bad advice, and the example of the sister survivors and warrior queens like Aunt Bertena who rerouted streams, changed fates, and above all, the faith that knows that The rain continues to fall on the just and the unjust alike. What she adds to the discussion is an emphasis on the importance of sexuality in the development of black female subjectivity, beginning with Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and continuing into contemporary black women's writings.Writing in a clear, lucid, and straightforward style, Weir-Soley supports her thesis with close readings of various texts, including Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Morrison's Beloved. She reveals how these writers highlight the interplay between the spiritual and the sexual through religious symbols found in Voudoun, Santeria, Condomble, Kumina, and Hoodoo.
