Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. An architect and archaeologist born in France, Augustus Charles Pugin (1762-1832) fled to England during the Revolution and worked there for 17 years in the London office of the noted architect John Nash. Pugin's interest in the Gothic style - coming early during the Gothic Revival - resulted in this influential and exquisitely drawn book of architectural ornaments, each item copied with rare precision and flair from the original decoration. The 100 superb royalty-free plates in the present volume have been meticulously reproduced from a very rare early edition of plates dating from 1828-31. Here is a wealth of floral, foliate, and other designs rendered from panels, capitals, borders, brackets, friezes, and other decorative elements adorning (primarily) ecclesiastical architecture. Included are finely detailed drawings of grotesques from the New College Chapel at Oxford, wooden choir-stall finials and elbow rests, wooden door ornaments and stone stringcourses from Rouen Cathedral, stone spandrels, and ornamental wooden and stone cusps from a number of English churches and chapels, stone paterae from Winchester Cathedral, and much more. Decorative samples from secular buildings include renderings of stone capitals from Kenilworth Castle, stone bosses from Eltham Palace in Kent, and brass figures from the tomb of Earl of Warwick. Now regarded as one of the major sourcebooks of Gothic ornamentation, Pugin's illustrations will be welcomed by students of architectural history and design as an invaluable reference tool. Artists, illustrators, designers, and craftspeople will find these ready-to-use motifs an inspiring source of excellent designs for fabrics, wallpaper, tiles, and many other projects.Reprint of Gothic Ornaments Selected From Various Buildings in England and France, Preistly & Weale, London, 1828-1831. One hundred plates of royalty-free Gothic designs, meticulously reproduced from rare 19th-century engravings. Many are floral and foliate designs rendered from panels, capitals, borders, brackets, friezes, grotesques, and other decorative elements. Añadir al carritoCloth. Condición: Very Good. Augustus Pugin; C Heath Ilustrador. A charming work consisting of 204 steel engravings of the French capital. A lovely volume consisting of 204 engraved views of Paris, accompanied by descriptive passages. The detailed engravings are the work of Augustus Pugin, an Anglo-French artist, draughtsman and writer on medieval architecture. Whilst Pugin was born in Paris, he left France during the Revolution and spent most of his life in England, thus able to straddle the divide between an insiders and outsiders depiction of the French capitol. The topographical and historical descriptive passages accompanying Pugin's engravings were written by L.T. Ventouillac. Two volumes in one, with a general engraved undated title page only, and continuous pagination. This work contains the contents pages of both volumes. Dated c.1831, as Volume I was published in 1929, and Volume II in 1831.Bearing both a former owner's inscription , 'D. L. Cumming', and contemporary owner's inscription, 'Mrs J. Bolding'. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with gilt detailing. Fading to spine and perimeters of boards. Bumping to spine head and tail, and extremities. Former owner's inscription to front pastedown. Front hinge weak, may detach from text block without careful handling. Rear hinge slightly tender. Contemporary owners inscription to recto of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Scattered light foxing throughout. Very Good. book.

Edward Blore; Frederick Mackenzie; John and Henry Le Keux; Charles Askey; Augustus Pugin; Charles Ferdinand Porden; Thomas Frazer Ranson; Samuel Rawle; R.C. Roffe; Robert Sands; John Scott; Edmund Turrell Ilustrador. First edition. Two volumes bound together of these fascinating first editions of fundamental works on English ecclesiastical architecture by John Britton, with superb illustrations. Two works by nineteenth-century, antiquary, John Britton. Comprised of; the 1817 first edition The History and Antiquities of the See and Cathedral Church of Winchester, bound with the 1819 first edition of The History and Antiquities of the Metropolitical Church of York. Two books bound in one volume of half calf with marble covered boards.Illustrated with two engraved title pages, additionally, Winchester Cathedral with a frontispiece and twenty-nine further plates, York Cathedral with thiry-four plates [xxx and xxv omitted]. Collated complete from digitised copies held by the New York Public Library and Harvard University via The Hathi Trust. These works were published as part of a monumental, fourteen-volume series on ecclesiastical architecture entitled; Cathedral Antiquities of England: Or, an Historical, Architectural, and Graphical Illustration of the English Cathedral Churches andproduced by Britton between 1814 and 1835.The series included surveys of the Cathedrals at Salisbury, Norwich, Winchester, York, Lichfield, Oxford, Canterbury, Wells, Exeter, Peterborough, Gloucester, Bristol, Hereford and Worcester. The copious beautiful plates required a remarkable collaboration between multiple renowed artists and engravers. With many ambitious ventures such as this having failed during the nineteenth-century, Britton is celebrated as an early populariser of the genre of vast, detailed topographical works. Two books bound in one, with a half calf binding and marbled boards. Externally, in smart condition. Noticeable scuffs to paper covers. Wear from rubbing to extremities and joints. The odd mark to leather. Rebound, with new end papers. Hinges starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
