Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Passage: The Art of Atong Atem is the first major monograph on acclaimed South Sudanese-Australian artist Atong Atem. A vivid exploration of migration, memory and the making of identity, it traces her journey from South Sudan to Australia's east coast, revealing how family, storytelling and image-making shape her richly staged portraits.Working across photography, video and textiles, Atem reimagines the intimacy of portraiture. Her signature framing devices - small portals hovering over her subjects' faces - invite us to look again, through a lens that is at once surreal and deeply personal. Drawing on the legacies of such African studio photographers as Malick Sidibe, Philip Kwame Apagya and Seydou Keita, she constructs lush tableaux that probe diaspora, postcolonial identity and the meaning of home.Lavishly illustrated and featuring new essays by leading international voices, Passage is an essential volume on one of the most compelling artists of her generation.Co-published with the National Gallery of Victoria. About the book >.>.> Photographs as medium of communication When I began my lifelong career as a journalist more than forty years ago, the first piece of advice my editor gave me was about the importance of photographs, emphasising the point by using the maxim that one photo was worth a thousand words. A news story without photos was regarded as lacking a sense of 'proof' that something had really happened. Two years later, after my colleagues and I were sent for training at a journalism school in Khartoum, photography was one of the subjects we all took. It was both theoretical and practical. It is with this in mind that I write in response to my daughter Atong Atem's work - forty years later and all the way in Australia - which combines family archives with self-portraits as a way of preserving our history. In the early 1980s, I became the head of the department of information for the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). In that capacity, I was able to capture a photograph that made history in many ways. In June 1984, the rebel movement was g.…
