Auch wenn die Geschichte der Iren in den USA bereits sehr gut erforscht ist, so bestehen bis heute erhebliche Forschungslücken zur gegenwärtigen Situation. Die Monographie "I"m proud to be Irish" beschäftigt sich deshalb mit der heutigen irischen Diaspora in den USA. Das Buch ist ein gründlich recherchierter Beitrag zur Ethnizitäts- und Diasporaforschung, zwei wichtigen Untersuchungsgebieten der Ethnologie. Die Ergebnisse über die irische Diaspora in den USA beruhen auf Feldforschungen in Irland und in den USA, insbesondere New York und Boston. Alle Erhebungs- und Auswertungsschritte des beeindruckend umfangeichen und unterschiedlichen Datenmaterials sind klar und verständlich dargestellt. In nachvollziehbarer Weise analysiert und präsentiert die Autorin die Vielfalt und innere Widersprüchlichkeit von Meinungen, Identitäten und Konflikten innerhalb der irischen Diaspora. SchlieÃlich werden, da Irland eine zentrale Rolle für die Identitätsbildung in der Diaspora spielt, in den USA populäre Irlandbilder sowie ihre Vermarktung im irischen Tourismus analysiert. Die ethnographische Studie zeigt, dass in der Ethnizitäts- und Migrationsforschung verbreitete Annahmen über die Weitergabe ethnischer Zuschreibungen über Generationen hinweg durch wesentlich komplexere Modelle ersetzt werden müssen, als sie lange Zeit verbreitet waren.
