Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a captivating glimpse into life in Melbourne, Australia during the 1850s and 1860s, a period of rapid growth and transformation following the gold rush. The author, a woman who emigrated to the colony and lived there for three years, shares her vivid observations of the city's social scene, architecture, and natural beauty. The book paints a rich portrait of colonial life, offering insights into the city's evolving social hierarchies, the impact of the gold rush on everyday life, and the anxieties and aspirations of a community grappling with rapid change. We witness the author's encounters with the upper crust of Melbourne society at lavish balls and picnics, alongside her encounters with the everyday life of the city's working class. Through her experiences, we gain a nuanced understanding of the dynamics of a developing colonial society and the complex interplay of class, privilege, and cultural identity. The author's observations also highlight the challenges and opportunities of a young and rapidly growing society. She discusses the city's burgeoning infrastructure, its burgeoning political scene, and the anxieties about social ills such as poor sanitation and the lack of access to quality education. The book stands as a testament to the author's keen eye for detail and her ability to capture the essence of a society in transition, offering readers a valuable window into a pivotal era in Australian history. Hardcover. First Edition. London, L. Booth, 1862. Octavo, xii (last blank), 300 pages. Original green cloth decorated in blind; gilt-decorated spine; covers lightly rubbed and marked; outer hinges splitting (but binding remains sound); extremities slightly bumped; edges dust-stained; endpapers a little discoloured and tape-marked; minor conservation and a little loss to the top margin of two consecutive preliminary leaves (opened carelessly); mild signs of age and handling (a few marks; emphases in blue pencil to a few pages; tiny edge tears and chips due to careless opening); overall, a very presentable copy. A contemporary signature is written in ink on the half-title (indecipherable, but perhaps 'James Rinder'?). The early initials 'JC' are written in blue pencil on the front free endpaper (presumably by the person responsible for the few annotations).…
