ALL UK PARCELS SENT TRACKED! ALL OVERSEAS PARCELS SENT AIRMAIL, TRACKED! (S/hand, Hardcover, 2004). 2004 1st edition. 4to (180 x 259mm). Ppviii,411. Colour paintings to preliminaries, b/w photographs and illustrations, extensive bibliography. Light tan boards, gilt titles to green cloth spine. Unobtrusive bump to one corner but…very good in dust-wrapper. Mihirungs are enormous flghtless birds which figure prominently in the myths and legends of the Australian Aborigines. Parallel to this, the Australian fossil record boasts several genera of enormous flightless birds, all members of the family Dromornithidae. Some dromornithid species were extant during the first couple of millenia of human occupation of the continent, and so presumably were mihirungs. "The smaller birds were one and a half meters tall and weighed about sixty kilograms; the largest were three meters tall and weighed nearly half a metric ton. This book is the first major study of this unique and highly diverse group. It introduces a wealth of knowledge about the dromornithids that has accumulated over the past two decades and that has led to an understanding of the relatiionships of these birds. .For the first time since their recognition in the nineteenth century, here is as complete a synthesis as possible of current information about this .family of birds." Chapters include: Introduction. Part One, Discovery: The discovery of the dromornithids. Part Two, Systematics and Morphology: Mihirungs, extinct gigantic Australian geese; Classification; Overview of Dromornithid species, localities and associated fauna; Description of dromornithid structure; Relationships and phylogeny; Dromornithids and the origin of anseriform birds; Relationships within the dromornithdae. Part Three, Paleobiology: Appearance, posture, and stature; Body mass estimations; Could dromornithids run?; The feeding apparatus; Economy of scale. Part Four: Evidence from local faunas; Habitat and diet; Evolution. Conclusion. .

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. Lost Land of the Dodo: An Ecological History of Mauritius, Reunion and Rodrigues, Cheke, Anthony, Hume, Julian P. Published by Poyser, London, 2008. First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; 464pp., colour, black and white illustrations, charts, diagrams, notes, 15 appendices, bibliograph…y and index. Blue cloth boards with gilt titles. In fine, unread condition; dustjacket has a very light top edge ruffle. Uninhabited by humans, the Mascarene Islands of the Indian Ocean were once home to an extraordinary range of birds and reptiles: giant tortoises, parrots, skinks, geckos, burrowing boas, flightless rails and herons, and, most famously, dodos. But the discovery of the three isolated islands in the 1500s, and their colonization in the 1600s, led to dramatic ecological changes. The dodo became extinct on its home island of Mauritius within several decades, and over the next 150 years most native vertebrates suffered the same fate. This fascinating book provides the first full ecological history of the Mascarene Islands as well as the specific story of each extinct vertebrate, accompanied by Julian Hume's superb color illustrations.

Buch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - A now-familiar emblem of extinction, the Dodo was extinct within 60 years of the colonization of Mauritius, and over the next 150 years most of the Mascarene's other native vertebrates followed suit. Lost Land of the Dodo provides the definitive account of this tragic yet remarkable fauna. The Mas…carene islands in the southern Indian Ocean--Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues--were once home to an extraordinary range of birds and reptiles. Evolving on these isolated volcanic islands in the absence of mammalian predators or competitors, the land was dominated by giant tortoises, parrots, skinks and geckos, burrowing boas, flightless rails & herons, and of course (in Mauritius) the Dodo. Uninhabited and only discovered in the 1500s, colonization by European settlers in the 1600s led to dramatic changes in the ecology of the islands; the birds and tortoises were slaughtered indiscriminately while introduced rats, cats, pigs and monkeys destroyed their eggs, the once-extensive forests logged, and invasive introduced plants from all over the tropics devastated the ecosystem. The now-familiar icon of extinction, the Dodo, was gone from Mauritius within 50 years of human settlement, and over the next 150 years many of the Mascarenes' other native vertebrates followed suit. The product of over 30 years research by Anthony Cheke, Lost Land of the Dodo provides a comprehensive yet hugely enjoyable account of the story of the islands' changing ecology, interspersed with human stories, the islands' biogeographical anomalies, and much else. Many French publications, old and new, especially for Réunion, are discussed and referenced in English for the first time. The book is richly illustrated with maps and contemporary illustrations of the animals and their environment, many of which have rarely been reprinted before. Illustrated box texts look in detail at each extinct vertebrate species, while Julian Hume's superb color plates bring many of the extinct birds to life. Lost Land of the Dodo provides the definitive account of this tragic yet remarkable fauna, and is a must-read for anyone interested in islands, their ecology and the history of our relationship with the world around us.
