Paperback. Hassam Andrew, Melbourne University Press. In the last quarter of the nineteenth-century, around 200,000 visitors from Australia landed in Britain. As members of the colonial elite, they sailed to the Old Country to experience their Britishness- they toured Westminster Abbey; they visited graves of parents; they threw snowballs at Christmas. As one visitor expressed it on arrival in London in 1889- 'Spotted St Paul's in the distance & felt at home'. Yet colonial Australians visiting 'Home' often struggled to identify with the place and culture they found. Their surprised and surprising reactions, and shifting sense of identity, are instantly recognisable today, and make for fascinating reading. Using unpublished diaries and letters, this book offers a unique and cross-disciplinary approach to cultural history. It considers both British and Australian national identities as the products of cultural displacement. Paperback.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 235 pages. Eight diaries, written on the long sea journey from the Old World to the New, are reproduced here for the first time. They cover the years 1852 to 1879, the peak years of mass migration by sail to Australia. There are eight distinct v oices collected here, and eight different stories told. The diversity is salutar y, and it would be misleading to suggest any are typical of the migrant experien ce. But they have all been written despite a lack of privacy, a want of time and inadequate facilities. No Privacy for Writing demonstrates both the harsh condi tions under which working people emigrated and the effort that diaries by workin g people represented. The diaries of working people have something to say tha t is not said by middle-class diarists. Emigration is seen from a different pers pective and writing played a different role in the lives of working-class diaris ts. Being less practised in literary language than the middle class, working peo ple used a more conversational tone as though speaking to those who remained at home. The phonetic spellings, reproduced true to the original text, reveal a ric h variety of regional accents all of which can be 'heard' on reading. The fou r men and four women are from different regions and occupations, yet each unique and individual voice speaks clearly to us across time of the hardships, fears a nd loneliness endured with moving courage by these nineteenth-century working pe ople.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The diary format has long been utilized by novelists as a means of imparting reality to fiction. This volume analyzes the forms of diary fiction employed by a range of British writers in the post-World War II period. It provides new commentaries on the work in this genre of major fiction writers such as William Golding, Doris Lessing, John Fowles, and Malcolm Lowry and introduces the work of a number of less familiar novelists like Eva Figes, Ann Quin, Emma Tennant, and Rayner Heppenstall. These writers all have used self-conscious diary fiction to explore the relationship between their writing and the reality it aims to represent. Writing and Reality outlines the ways in which such work as a whole challenges the dominant cultural values of contemporary Britain. The book begins by considering the context of this writing and proceeds to examine the textual strategies that distinguish the diary novel. It looks in depth at normative attempts to define the diary novel and considers the relationship between the nonfiction diary and its fictional counterpart. Later chapters analyze the texts according to specific issues arising from the fiction, including factuality, history, autobiography, and gender. The volume includes a comprehensive primary and secondary bibliography of the subject with supplementary listings of works by and about eight of the novelists whose work has received little serious critical attention. This insightful study will be of interest and value to scholars researching forms and genres of fiction, autobiographical writing, and contemporary British novelists. Writing and Reality outlines the ways in which such work as a whole challenges the dominant cultural values of contemporary Britain. The book begins by considering the context of this writing and proceeds to examine the textual strategies that distinguish the diary novel.
