The overthrow, prior to elections in which Georgios Papandreou was favored to win, culminated in several years in which civil liberties were quashed, and imprisonment and torture of political opponents was commonplace. Burns, then resident in Greece, had the poem smuggled to London, where its reception anticipated the brutality of the tinpot colonels.First published in London Magazine, this is the first printing.
