Añadir al carritoCondición: Very Good. An excellent annotated album of bull-fighting by a noted writer. Reynolds, a British journalist, was the author of three books of travel: FROM THE IVORY COAST TO THE CAMEROONS (1929), BY DESERT WAYS TO INDIAN SNOWS (1932), and AFRICAN PASSAGE (1935). Most images taken by Reynolds (with his stamp and penned…comments to verso of many pictures). Subjects encompass the totality of Tauromaquia: from the selection of the bulls and the opening processions to the spectacle of the ring. Numerous action shots, including several gorings. The images primarily show the matadors and toreadors: Maera, Joselito, Cojida, and Nino de Palma - said to be the model for Pedro Romero in THE SUN ALSO RISES. With Reynolds' concise but informative typed captions, an engaging portrait of the culture and sport of bullfighting we suspect was a intended for eventual publication. Hardcover. Oblong 4to. cloth-bound album. 25 x 36cm. 103 original photographs, most (92) approx. 3.5 x 5.5" with remaining 7 x 9.5". Almost all images accompanied by typed detailed captions. SIGNED by Reynold's to front pastedown. Covers rather rubbed and wrinkled. Else sound and internally fine. Very good overall. Signed.

Añadir al carritoA scarce, photographically illustrated press booklet for celebrated Black cowboy and Wild West showman Bill "The Bull-Dogger" Pickett's starring film role. The film, advertised as "A Real Breath of the Virile Golden West" with "The Greatest Array of World Champions Ever Assembled In a Motion Picture," was produced by Norman Stud…ios of Jacksonville, Florida. Norman Studios, founded by the White producer and director, Richard E. Norman, was one of the most prominent "race film" studios of the 1920s. Melodramas, westerns, and action-adventure films were all produced by the studio. The Bull-Dogger was their most famous western, and its star, Bill Pickett, was renowned as a cowboy before he even stepped before the cameras. Born in Travis County, Texas, in 1870 to a formerly enslaved father, Pickett worked as a cowboy from an early age, gaining notoriety for developing the technique of "bull-dogging"wrestling a bull to the ground by its hornsan act featured in the film. He later joined the travelling 101 Wild West Show and appeared in a second western for Norman Studios called The Crimson Skull in 1922. This thoroughly illustrated press booklet was distributed to theatre owners to encourage them to show Pickett's film, which was "Staged on the Great Western Ranches and in Wellinton, Okmulgee, Oklahoma City, and Boley, Oklahoma, the All-Colored City." Illustrations show Pickett wrestling bulls, of course, but also feature other performers such as "Steve Reynolds, the One-legged Cowboy," "Buck Lucas, Colored Cowboy," and a number of other trick riders, trick ropers, and steer drivers. Norman's ad copy insists that "Your Patrons are crying for 'pictures of today' and not of 'Slavery times.' Pictures of real facts and what present day Colored Heroes are doing," and ensures that "The Quicker You Book and Play 'The Bull-Dogger,' The Quicker Your Bank Balance Will Increase." Norman's silent film studio in Jacksonville, Florida, which closed shortly after the advent of talking films in the early 1930s, was rediscovered in 1999 and repaired over several years. It was eventually converted into the Norman Studios Silent Film Museum and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2016. We locate no other copy of this precise pressbook, though Norman Studios produced at least two others for The Bull-Dogger which are recorded, both quite scarce themselves. An interesting and appealing piece of Black film ephemera. Single bifolium. Light even tanning, old dampstaining along gutter, with some discoloration and minor loss. Good plus.
