Taschenbuch / Paperback. Condición: Gut. 283 p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Seh…r guter Allgemeinzustand, nur Einband minimal berieben / Very good overall condition, only cover minimally worn. - With the exception of a poem on the unscripted death of a lion in the Colosseum, Book II of Statius Siluae is largely domestic in theme. It reflects the more private side of Roman culture, its pleasures, houses, gardens, friendships, and personal losses; it concludes with a provocative tribute to the poet Lucan. Despite its variety, the book is carefully constructed as a unit, and Carole Newlands puts the book into its context in the history of Greek and Roman poetry. This commentary takes into account the important work done on the text of the Siluae in the past two decades as well as the new perspectives brought to bear on Flavian culture by historians and archaeologists. Carole Newlands explores Statius use of the short poem as a playful engagement with literary tradition that also reflects changing ideas of Roman cultural identity. /CONTENTS Preface Introduction 1 Life 2 The character of the Siluae 3 Title/titles i Siluae ii tituli 4 Themes of book 2 i Overview ii Lament and consolation iii Art and nature: the villa and garden 5 The structure of book 2 6 Patrons and patronage i Patronage in the Flavian age ii Recitation iii The patrons of book 2 7. Brill, Leiden, 1984. X,539,(5)p. Theses. Paperback. Diss. Rijksuniversiteit Leiden. Upper corner front cover as well as first pages a bit creased. ?Like Fraenkel?s Agamemnon, this book is striking for its seize - 529 pages, of which the text occupies twenty. Perhaps Statius?s literary quality in itself does not justify such ampl…e treatment (although ages more familiar than our own with Latin poetry rated him very highly), but the difficulties which arise from his display of learning and his pursuit of the unexpected, when added to the many and perplexing textual problems, justify the editor in bringing to bear this park of erudite artillery. (?) The expository part of the commentary is full and learned, and only very rarely is a possible interpretation missed. (?) In preparing this commentary Van Dam appears to have read the work of all modern scholars who could throw light on(or sometimes darkness) on the literary and linguistic interpretation. The section ?Literature? of his bibliography contains over 500 items, and if his comments are sometimes of a length which may fatigue all who are not dedicated readers of Statius, they contain so much information relative to the poet and the genre that no one will feel that they have wasted his time. (?) It is to be hope that Van Dam will not stop at this point, but will complete the task for which he is so well fitted.? (J.A. WILLIS in Mnemosyne, 1988, pp.207-210).

Introduction and commentary designed for advanced students. Written for the most part after the success of the Thebaid, the Silvae present a dialogue between the life of court politics and that of cultured withdrawal, delicately and allusively exploring the competing values of courtly service and private life.
