The publication explores this, the artist's earliest period of work and presents all the paintings he produced during this time, their expressiveness radically different from the courtly-elegant compositions he subsequently produced as court painter in Wittenberg.Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) produced his earliest works around 1500 in Vienna, shortly before moving to Wittenberg to become court painter to the Elector of Saxony. These brilliant paintings, drawings, and woodcuts document both the thirty-year-old's close contacts with the humanist circles of Konrad Celtis and Johannes Cuspinian, and identify him as a precursor of the so-called Danube School. About the book >.>.> The main reason for this is that no more than two dozen panels, drawings and woodcuts by him have survived from the few years we know he spent in Vienna just after the turn of the sixteenth century. It is not only their small number and rarity that distinguishes these works from the mass-production characteristic of Cranach's time in Wittenberg, where he moved in 1505 to become court painter to the Electors of Saxony; it is their at times almost raw expressivity that differentiates them so dramatically from the courtly-elegant manner typical of Cranach's later works. With their artistic power and often unconventional compo-sitions and solutions, Cranach's Viennese works are both among the most exceptional art-works from the early sixteenth century and the greatest treasures of the museums that house them today. The Oskar Reinhart Collection "Am R?merholz" in Winterthur and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna are the only museums in the world to hold two early paintings by Cranach, apart from the Gem?ldegalerie Berlin whose celebrat.

168 pp. Englisch.
