Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - More Than a Race is about the notorious Race Across America (the RAAM) known as the world's toughest bicycle race. The story tracks a four-man team of septuagenarians who proved that age is no obstacle to superlative performance. Adding to the narrative are the voices of families and crew m…embers, whose perspectives on the racers and crew dynamics enrich the account. Leaving Oceanside CA on June 12, 2012, the team and their hard-working support crew of 15 raced to Annapolis MD in 6 days, 13 hours, 13 minutes, at an average of 19.04 mph. They not only broke the 70+ record by 27 hours, but also bested the 60+ record by more than 3 hours. Sponsored by UnitedHealthcare, the team overcame more than its share of obstacles, including 100-degree desert heat, a hospitalization, fierce Kansas winds, a bike dropped at high speed onto a highway in Illinois, and the final agony of the Appalachian Mountains. More Than a Race is a must-read for all cyclists and armchair adventurers alike.

Paperback. Condición: Good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. xx, 218, [2] pages. Illustrations. Maps. Illustrated covers. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. Inscription reads For Gary with best wishes--Don Metz 5/10/14. Cover has some dings and slight corner curling. This chronicles the RAAM 2012 in which fou…r 70-year-old cyclists ride The Race Across America in 6 Days, 13 hours. The author was one of a team of four seasoned cyclists who took on the 3,000-mile Race Across America with a goal of setting a new record. Sponsored by United Healthcare and supported by an intrepid crew of 15, the racers endured scorching deserts, punishing winds, bone-jarring pavement, life-threatening traffic, 170,000 ft. of climbing and acute exhaustion on their epic journey. Not your typical grandfathers, these elite athletes averaged 19,04 mph from Oceanside, CA, to Annapolis, MD. They broke the existing 70+ record by 27 hours and the best the 60" record by 3 hours. More Than a Race gives an insider's view of the challenges of extreme physical and mental stress, the astonishing logistics required to move 19 people and 5 vehicles across the continent in 6-1/2 days, and the joys of the team's remarkable accomplishments. More Than a Race is about the notorious Race Across America (the RAAM) known as the world's toughest bicycle race. The story tracks a four-man team of septuagenarians who proved that age is no obstacle to superlative performance. Adding to the narrative are the voices of families and crew members, whose perspectives on the racers and crew dynamics enrich the account. Leaving Oceanside CA on June 12, 2012, the team and their hard-working support crew of 15 raced to Annapolis MD in 6 days, 13 hours, 13 minutes, at an average of 19.04 mph. The Race Across America, or RAAM, is an ultra-distance road cycling race held across the United States that started in 1982 as the Great American Bike Race. RAAM is one of the longest annual endurance events in the world. All entrants must prove their abilities by competing in any of several qualifying events, completing a course within a specified time period. Currently, RAAM is several hundred miles longer than the Tour de France, and the two races differ in many other aspects. The courses of both races have varied over the years. However, in the Race Across America, the direction has always been from the west coast to the east coast of the United States, approximately 3,000 miles (4,800 km), making it a transcontinental event. More importantly, the race has no stages, i.e., it is a nonstop event from start to finish, with the fastest competitors needing slightly over 7 days to complete the course. By contrast, the Tour de France features a different route each year (alternating between clockwise and counterclockwise circuits around France) and is about 2,300 miles long; the distance is divided into individual daily stages spread over the course of about 3 weeks including rest days and contested at much higher on-bike speeds, but much lower overall average speed. The first incarnation of RAAM, The Great American Bike Race, was organized by John Marino in 1982. There were four competitors: John Marino himself, John Howard, Michael Shermer, and Lon Haldeman. The course started in Santa Monica, California and finished at the Empire State Building in New York City, where Haldeman emerged as the winner.
