Condición: New. Hardback 158 pages + plates On Friday of Easter Week, approximately thirty-five Fingal Volunteers surrounded the Ashbourne RIC barracks and demanded its surrender. The police responded with a volley of gunfire, initiating a firefight. The Volunteers eventually assaulted the building with a homemade explosive device, prompting the garrison to consider surrender. Before this could be effected, however, a convoy carrying up to sixty additional RIC personnel arrived, triggering a prolonged engagement lasting roughly five hours. Fourteen RIC men were killed and eighteen wounded; the Volunteers suffered two fatalities and five wounded, and a civilian was also killed.Ultimately, the RIC forces capitulated and were disarmed. Commandant Thomas Ashe released the prisoners after cautioning them against further action on behalf of the British authorities. The engagement at Ashbourne thus stands as a significant, though often under-examined, element of the wider Easter Rising. Book.…
