Under both Mao and Deng, Chinese historians and cultural figures regularly make political points about contemporary affairs through clever historical a…nalogies, both in support of the state and in dissent. This book elucidates the Mao-era controversies over "history-writing" that sent famous intellectuals to prison and gave the Cultural Revolution its name. It examines the political debates of the 1980s over whether China derived benefits earlier this century from capitalist operations and from international finance (and, by implication, whether China benefits today). It analyzes how popular culture in the 1990s re-interprets history, as popular opinion and portions of the mass media increasingly slip beyond government control. Ten scholars from three continents focus on topics and issues that will engross historians and political scientists alike. Professor Jonathan Unger (born 1946) is a journalist and an expert on China. His major works include The Transformation of Rural China and The Nature of Chinese Politics from Mao to Jiang (as editor). Unger is currently conducting research on Chinese state-owned factories. He was editor and co-editor of The China Journal from July 1987 until July 2005. He research interests include social stratification in China; rural Chinese social and economic change; workers and factory life; and Chinese nationalism. Academic staff member of the Institute of Development Studies, University of Kansas before coming to Australian National University Book is a collection of papers put together by editor Jonathan Unger, however features nine different authors.
