This is one of the Profiles In Power series. Robert Pearce was a Reader in History at the University College of St. Martin, Lancaster at the time of this publication. Robert Alasdair Pearce (born 28 November 1951) is a British academic. He was the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales, Lampeter between 2003 and 2008. Educated at Grammar Schools in Birmingham, Bristol and Gloucester, Pearce went on to study law at Pembroke College, Oxford (BA Hons (Jurisprudence) 1973; BCL 1974; MA 1978). From there he went on to hold academic positions at the Universities of Newcastle upon Tyne, University College of St. Martin, Lancaster, University College Cork (part of the National University of Ireland), and at the University of Western Ontario. Pearce was Professor in Law at the University of Buckingham between 1990 and 2003, where he was successively Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Acting Vice-Chancellor. On 1 October 2003, he became the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Wales, Lampeter, in succession to Keith Robbins. In this capacity, he was Welsh Supernumerary Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford for the academic year 2007/8. He retired as Vice-Chancellor in September 2008. He has also been an academic auditor for the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education and its predecessor, the Higher Education Quality Council, since 1993. Attlee is undoubtedly one of the key figures in modern British history. An important figure in Churchill's War Cabinet, and premier of the first majority Labour Government, he created the Welfare State, nationalized a substantial part of industry and secured the independence of India. Yet his political stature remains unresolved. Was he Churchill's "modest man with much to be modest about" who squandered the fruits of victory, or, as many now claim, one of the truly great prime ministers? Robert Pearce's lucid study goes behind the stern exterior to find ambition and indecision, and a uniquely moral vision. Clement Richard Attlee, 1st Earl Attlee, KG, OM, CH, PC, FRS (3 January 1883 - 8 October 1967) was a British statesman and Labour Party politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1945 to 1951 and Leader of the Labour Party from 1935 to 1955. He was Deputy Prime Minister during the wartime coalition government under Winston Churchill, and served twice as Leader of the Opposition from 1935 to 1940 and from 1951 to 1955. Attlee remains the longest serving Labour leader and is widely considered by historians and members of the public through various polls to be one of the greatest Prime Ministers of the United Kingdom. Attlee's foreign policy focused on decolonization efforts which he delegated to Ernest Bevin, but Attlee personally oversaw the partition of India (1947), the independence of Burma and Ceylon, and the dissolution of the British mandates of Palestine and Transjordan. Attlee and Bevin encouraged the United States to take a vigorous role in the Cold War; unable to afford military intervention in Greece during its civil war, he called on Washington to counter the communists there. The strategy of containment was formalized between the two nations through the Truman Doctrine. He supported the Marshall Plan to rebuild Western Europe with American money and, in 1949, promoted the NATO military alliance against the Soviet bloc. After leading Labour to a narrow victory at the 1950 general election, he sent British troops to fight alongside South Korea in the Korean War. Attlee had inherited a country close to bankruptcy following the Second World War and beset by food, housing and resource shortages; despite his social reforms and economic program, these problems persisted throughout his premiership, alongside recurrent currency crises and dependence on US aid. His party was narrowly defeated by the Conservatives in the 1951 general election, despite winning the most votes. He continued as L.
