Accordingly, the main papers were presented in the following areas: magnetic properties of solids, applications to in organic chemistry, biochemical studies, amorphous systems, metal alloys, advances in high-resolution studies, and the new techniques for studying recoil-free spectra from isolated atoms in inert materials. A special panel discussion was devoted to the subject of phase transitions. Recent years have witnessed a rapid growth in the use of X-ray photoelec tron spectroscopy for the study of the physics and chemistry of solids. A report on this area of research and its rela tion to Kdssbauer studies has been included.

Neuware - This volume presents the proceedings of the Second International Sym posium on Acoustical Holography, which was held at the Douglas Advanced Research Laboratories on 6 and 7 March 1969, fifteen months after the first symposium. Space was limited to about 110 seats, with representatives from… nine countries attending. These countries included Canada, England, France, Japan, Mexico, Scotland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The symposium consisted of 21 formal papers. The twenty second, by Dr. U. Fehr, was not read, but is included in these proceedings. The manu script of the interesting paper on acoustic propagation in a turbulent medium which was read by Dr. O. K. Mawardi was not received in time for publication in these proceedings, and we look forward to its publication perhaps at a later date in the open literature. In addition to the formal papers there were three informal presentations at the end of the meeting which were given by Dr. A. Lohmann, by L. A. Cram and K. O. Rossiter, and by T. S. Graham, which are also included in these proceedings. At the end of the formal presentations Dr. Lewis Larmore summarized the symposium and discussed some of the highlights. For the symposium summary and a summary of these proceedings the reader is referred to Chapter 1.

A direct outgrowth of a AAAS symposium entitled 'Recent Advances in the Behavior of Marine Organisms' held in December 1966, these vol umes include a reasonable balance between review and original unpublished research. Of the many persons who have made these volumes possible, we wish to especially thank Nancy Fish, Lois Winn, Mabel Trafford, and Deborah Brennan. Enkephalins have followed such a pattern, and the present publication expresses the salient points of the last two phases in this succession. Enkephalins were discovered in December 1975; in addition to pain threshold regulation, their participation in other brain functions was soon ascertained. Perhaps, there are multiple recognition sites for multiple molecular forms of endogenous enkephalins; similarly to other transmitter recognition sites, these are coupled with ionic and nucleotide amplifying systems; thus, when activated, they can modify membrane funtion and ionic permeability of membranes. The present publication probes the current status of our knowledge concerning the consequences related to abnormalities in enkephalin storage, release, and synthesis. However, since our basic understanding of enkephalins is incomplete, the views reported should be considered to be in a state of flux. 512 pp. Englisch.

It's true enough, as many suspect, that the big, well-known company has something of an edge over the smaller, lesser-known company com peting for any given government contract-psychologically, at least: The typical government executives, whether contracting officials or program managers, tend to have a bit more faith in the ability of the large company to carry out the program successfully. All things being equal, then, the big company is more likely to get the nod. However, because the large companies are well aware of that, many tend to become 'fat, dumb, and happy'-they try to coast or rest on their laurels. In spi. te of the many high pressure conferences held in recent year…s, I felt that there was a need for scientists within a well-defined area (not bound merely by the common experimental technique) to meet in an atmosphere conducive to frank exchange and close interaction. In this spirit, the Cleveland State University hosted such a conference from July 20 to 22, 1977, in which the physics of solids under high pressures and at low tempera tures was specifically examined. Both the original and review papers presented at the conference and the candid discussions following their presentations appear in this volume. They clearly cover a rather complete spectrum of current research in the physics of solids at high pressures and low temperatures. Semiconducting compounds formed by combining an element from column II of the periodic table with an element from column VI (so called II-VI Semiconductors) have long promised many optoelectronic devices operating in the visible region of the spectrum. However, these materials have encountered numerous problems including: large number of defects and difficulties in obtaining p- and n-type doping. Advances in new methods of material preparation may hold the key to unlocking the unfulfilled promises. During the workshop a full session was taken up covering the prospects for wide-gap II-VI Semiconductor devices, particularly light emitting ones. The growth of bulk materials was reviewed with the view of considering II-VI substrates for the novel epitaxial techniques such as MOCVD, MBE, ALE, MOMBE and ALE-MBE. Accordingly, most of the invited spea…kers are biologists, in the broad sense of representing some area of the life sciences. Likewise, many of the submitted papers eventually chosen by the technical com mittee were from the life sCiences, rather than the physical sciences or mathe matics. In this way, it was hoped that a greater direct interest in the technological problems of bionics might be stimulated among biologists, upon whose work much of the success of bionics necessarily lies. Because of the wide interdisciplinary span of the papers, it was necessary to impose some artificial organization upon them, specifically for continuity in the transactions. We elected to put the biological papers first, followed by those which deal with reasonably specific models, and reserveto the last those papers reporting models which are more general in nature. The editorial function was kept to a minimum, with no major alterations of content and few of style being exercised. Several of the papers delivered at the symposium required a longer format for clarity and are included here in ex panded versions. The CCMS was charged with developing meaningful environ…men tal and social programs that complement other international pro grams, and with showing leadership, first, in solution of exist ing problems and, second, in development of long-range goals for environmental protection in the NATO sphere of influence and in other countries as well. A first Pilot Study on Air Pollution was initiated by the CCMS at its inaugural meeting in December 1969. It resulted in documents about the definition of criteria for the effects of air pollutants as well as the development of assess ment methods for air quality in urban areas. A second Air Pollution Pilot Study (1975-1979) worked out the basics for setting up assessment methods for emissions inven tories, techniques for the practical application of meteorologi cal diffusion models as well as the development of guidelines for an Air Quality Management System (AQMS). Within this second Air Pollution Pilot Study attention to modelling concentrated on the Gaussian Plume Model. It was in 1928 that Ascheim and Zondek reported that urine from pregnant women contains something that stimulates the ovaries of mice or rats. This provided the basis for the famous A-Z test for pregnancy and for the 'rabbit test' modification introduced by Friedman. As researchers sought to find more sensitive responses to heG, they used a wide variety of species including the South African aquatic toad, Xenopus Zaevis, the terrestrial toad of South America, Bufo arinarus, and the African weaver finch, EupZeetes afra. The weaver finch feather reaction was particularly noteworthy, for it disclosed a non-gonadal response to heG/LH. In retrospect, this may have been an important evolutionary clue to the realization that the designation of the hormone as a 'gonadotropin' may have been only partially descriptive of the molecule's physiological function--a concept that is gaining attention, as the papers in this 1980 volume divulge. 520 pp. Englisch.

Topics discussed include the biogenesis of membrane proteins, sugars and lipids, the role of membrane components in osmoregula tion, and mechanisms of nutrient transport. Of great interest is the system for surface recognition evolved in vertebrates, exemplified by the HLA system of man. Neoplasia causes changes in the cell membrane that may be of significant future potential in the diagnosis and treatment of malignancies as well as in the understanding of the process of transformation. Accordingly, they exhibit scattering, e.g., x-ray, electron, and neutron, but not the diffraction patterns characteristic of crystals. The intensit…y distributions from NC solids are usually transformed into radial distribution functions (RDF), but the interpretation of the RDF's is not unique. The lack of long-range order, and the non-uniqueness of the structural interpretation, have constituted the main obstacles to the usual solid state physics approach which has been so successful in dealing with crystals. As a corrolary, questions of local order and structure have frequently been de-emphasized. This monograph contains a collection of chapters many of which emphasize local-structure and chemical bonding as opposed to long-range order. Most of the chapters were chosen from talks given at the international symposium, 'Structure and Bonding in Noncrystalline Solids,' held in Reston, Virginia in May of 1983. Other chapters, however, were simply submitted independently of the Reston conference. Thus, this book is not a proceedings of that conference, nor was it ever intended to be. The chapters presented here range from theory of bonding and structure, to structurally oriented measurements of various kinds, e.g., ESR, Raman, to more applied chapters. This is why the technology for experiments with the new generation of Supercolliders needs to be pursued having in mind the problems which are of common interest in the three energy frontiers. The primary purpose of the Workshop was to contribute towards the highest energy limit in the search for new instruments and new technologies. Furthermore, the present status and performances of various detector technologies were reviewed. The possible options for a powerful apparatus whose goal would be the discovery of the top, Higgs and SUSY particles in a very high energy, high rate environment, were finally analysed. The basis of this paradox is that one-electron reduction of O2 generates the superoxide anion free radical, 0;-, from numerous biological sources; for example, redox-active autoxidizable molecules such as catecholamines, oxidoreductases, and subcellular organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reti'C ulum (microsomes), nuclei, and chloroplasts. Oxygen is also acti vated in biologically relevant photosensitizing reactions to highly re active singlet oxygen, 10 , 2 In all biological systems, 0;- undergoes further reduction to H 0 2 2 via Fenton reaction to the hydroxyl radical, OH. These, and some other forms of activated O , constitute reactive oxygen species (ROS) 2 and/or metabolites (ROM). Both 'OH and 10 are the most reactive 2 forms of ROS known and among their deleterious reactions are ox idation of proteins, DNA, steroidal compounds, and peroxidation of the cell membrane's unsaturated lipids to form unstable hydro peroxides. Their many breakdown products include malondialde hyde and hydroxynonenals that are themselves highly reactive and threaten cellular integrity and function. More importantly, they de compose to free radicals that can continue to propagate the vicious lipid peroxidation chain reaction.
