Looking back over the past ten years, we have made remarkable progress toward the treatment of the viral disease: isolation of HIV only two years after the identification of the disease, plus major strides in the areas of the molecular biology and virology of the retrovirus, etc. More remarkably, the discovery of the chemotherapeutic agent AZT (Retrovir) was made within two years after the isolation and identification of the virus, followed by unprecedented drug development efforts to culminate in the FDA approval of AZT in twenty-three months, which was a record-breaking time for approval of any drug for a major disease. The last six to seven years have particularly been an exciting and productive period for nucleoside chemists. Since the activity of AZI' was established in 1985, nucleoside chemists have had golden opportunities to discover additional anti-HIV nucleosipes, which are hoped to be less toxic and more effective than AZT, and the opportunity continues. Inevitably, the reality will not live up to the hype, but such is the natural course of devel opment in these sorts of matters. GaAs MESFETs have been applied in microwave systems as low…-noise and high-power amplifiers since the early 1970s, replacing silicon devices. The heterojunction high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT), invented in 1980, has become a key component for satellite broadcasting receiver systems, serving as the ultra-low-noise device at 12 GHz. Furthermore, the heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) has been considered as having the highest switching speed and cutoff frequency in the semiconductor device field. Initially most of these devices were used for analog high-frequency applications, but there is also a strong need to develop high-speed III-V digital devices for computer, telecom munication, and instrumentation systems, to replace silicon high-speed devices, because of the switching-speed and power-dissipation limitations of silicon. The potential high speed and low power dissipation of digital integrated circuits using GaAs MESFET, HEMT, HBT, and superconducting Josephson junction devices has evoked tremendous competition in the race to develop such technology. A technology review shows that Japanese research institutes and companies have taken the lead in the development of these devices, and some integrated circuits have already been applied to supercomputers in Japan. The activities of Japanese research institutes and companies in the III-V and superconducting device fields have been superior for three reasons. Lead-based paint has become a tremendous health hazard… for people and animals. Lead-based paint has been in widespread use throughout Europe and the United States. Lead has been known to be a health hazard since the time ofPliny the Elder (A. D. 23-79), but it was deemed that the advantages of lead in paint outweighed the health hazards. There has been a change in outlook, and in 1973 the U. S. Congress banned all lead paint from residential structures. A voluminous number of law suits have been initiated since, and continue to be litigated with the purpose of determining the parties responsible for the lead poisoning of children and others and to exact the indemnities. Lead-based paint is still authorized for use on bridges and nonresidential structures, and thousands of city, state, military, and federal government housing projects still contain lead-based paint. This paint must be removed if these dwellings are to be safe living quarters, especially for children. Aba- ment techniques continue to be evaluated; some have been used successfully. Lead-based paint abatement will continue into the next century, and it is hoped that this comprehensive volume will serve as a guide for those seriously interested in this important subject. 308 pp. Englisch.

This series of symposia was initiated in 1987 in light of the growing importance to eliminate particles from process gases and liquids. As pointed out in the Preface to antecedent volumes in this series that particles in process gases and liquids could cause significant yield losses in precision manufacturing and concomitantly there has been heightened interest in understanding the behavior of particles in gases and liquids and devising ways to eliminate, or at least reduce substantially, these particles. The concern about particles in gases and liquids has been there for qui.te some time in the microelectronics arena, but there are other areas also where particles are of significant concern, e.g. in operation theatres in hospitals, food and beverage industry, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. This symposium basically had the same objectives as its predecessors, but to provide an update on the R&D activity taking place in the arena of particle detection, characterization and control. The printed program comprised a total of 28 papers dealing with variegated aspects of particles in gases and liquids. There were brisk and lively discussions and the attendees offered many positive comments, which goes to show that it was a well-received and needed symposium. 308 pp. Englisch.

At that time, there was quite a bit o…f rancorous debate that tended to obscure the scientific and medical merits of each of the separate methods. At the present time, I am happy to report that the field of stereotactic radiosurgery is much less riven by such inappropriate posturing. The field has taken many steps towards maturity, both technically and medically. In the course of this mat uration process, there have been many grandiose plans and speeches made on behalf of stereotactic radiosurgery. Inevitably, the reality will not live up to the hype, but such is the natural course of devel opment in these sorts of matters. However, even though events may not match our hopes, we should keep in mind the words of Herbert Parker. Recognizing that new modalities for the treatment of cancer do not stand much chance of revolutionary success, nevertheless, he quite correctly pointed out that ' . . . with any type of radiatiQn, the margin between success and failure is small. Lead-based paint has become a tremendous health hazard for… people and animals. Lead-based paint has been in widespread use throughout Europe and the United States. Lead has been known to be a health hazard since the time ofPliny the Elder (A. D. 23¿79), but it was deemed that the advantages of lead in paint outweighed the health hazards. There has been a change in outlook, and in 1973 the U. S. Congress banned all lead paint from residential structures. A voluminous number of law suits have been initiated since, and continue to be litigated with the purpose of determining the parties responsible for the lead poisoning of children and others and to exact the indemnities. Lead-based paint is still authorized for use on bridges and nonresidential structures, and thousands of city, state, military, and federal government housing projects still contain lead-based paint. This paint must be removed if these dwellings are to be safe living quarters, especially for children. Aba- ment techniques continue to be evaluated; some have been used successfully. First, t…he growth of insight into basic mechanisms of lymphomagenesis is explosive, as is the expansion of our understanding of the need for precise morphologic classification of these diseases. Second, new therapeutic agents, cytotoxic and biologic, as well as new drug delivery strategies, are appearing with remarkable frequency. Finally, old 'standard' approaches, such as the staging laparotomy for Hodgkin's disease, are being reconsidered and deserve attention in an up-to-date collection of papers. The 10 reviews presented here fall generally into three categories. First, the optimal diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to Hodgkin's disease are considered by Mark Leibenhaut, who reviews the status of the diagnostic staging laparotomy, and by Philip Bierman, who discusses his thoughts on the timing of high-dose treatment with bone marrow transplantation for this disease. There follow four reviews of current management of specific histologic subtypes of malignant lymphoma. First, Velasquez reviews prognostic factors in both intermediate and high grade lymphomas. Miller and Dahlberg review and update the Southwest Oncology Group experience in developing curative cytotoxic combination therapies for diffuse large-cell lymphomas. Lastly, optimal therapy for two kinds of high grade lymphoma are presented. This series of symposia was initiated in 1987 in light of the growing importance to eliminate particles from process gases and liquids. As pointed out in the Preface to antecedent volumes in this series that particles in process gases and liquids could cause significant yield losses in precision manufacturing and concomitantly there has been heightened interest in understanding the behavior of particles in gases and liquids and devising ways to eliminate, or at least reduce substantially, these particles. The concern about particles in gases and liquids has been there for qui.te some time in the microelectronics arena, but there are other areas also where particles are of significant concern, e.g. in operation theatres in hospitals, food and beverage industry, and pharmaceutical manufacturing. This symposium basically had the same objectives as its predecessors, but to provide an update on the R&D activity taking place in the arena of particle detection, characterization and control. The printed program comprised a total of 28 papers dealing with variegated aspects of particles in gases and liquids. GaAs MESFETs have been applied in microwave systems as low-noi…se and high-power amplifiers since the early 1970s, replacing silicon devices. The heterojunction high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT), invented in 1980, has become a key component for satellite broadcasting receiver systems, serving as the ultra-low-noise device at 12 GHz. Furthermore, the heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) has been considered as having the highest switching speed and cutoff frequency in the semiconductor device field. Initially most of these devices were used for analog high-frequency applications, but there is also a strong need to develop high-speed III-V digital devices for computer, telecom munication, and instrumentation systems, to replace silicon high-speed devices, because of the switching-speed and power-dissipation limitations of silicon. The potential high speed and low power dissipation of digital integrated circuits using GaAs MESFET, HEMT, HBT, and superconducting Josephson junction devices has evoked tremendous competition in the race to develop such technology. A technology review shows that Japanese research institutes and companies have taken the lead in the development of these devices, and some integrated circuits have already been applied to supercomputers in Japan. The activities of Japanese research institutes and companies in the III-V and superconducting device fields have been superior for three reasons.
