Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Growth of immobilized cells can be viewed as an alternative to growth of free cells in many instances. In others, immobilization confers a precision of control over the process not possible in free growth. Immobilization of cells can sometimes be considered to be a lower cost alternative to immobilization of enzymes. In this volume, immobilization procedures based on mechanical means and bonding of various types are examined, with detailed application examples. These applications include microorganisms, plant and animal cells, sub-cellular organelles and multiple enzyme systems. Particular attention is devoted to enzyme properties in immobilized cells and the properties of the carrier. The volume should provide the reader with a comprehensive overview of the subject, together with copious references. As well as serving as a research monograph, it could be used to provide reference material for a graduate course. Special thanks are due Mrs. JENNIFER KERBY for her dedicated work in the preparation of the manuscript, and IT-CHIN HSIEH for bibliographical assistance. COLIN R. PHILLIPS Toronto, July 1988 YIU C. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -This volume contains most of the invited papers presented at the International Work shop on Synergetics, Schloss E1mau, Bavaria, May 2 to.May 7, 1977. This workshop fol lowed an International Symposium on SynergetiGS at Schloss E1mau, 1972, and an Inter national SUl11l1erschoo1 at Erice, Sicily, 1974. Synergetics is a rather new field of interdisciplinary research which studies the self-organized behavior of systems leading to the formation of structures and func tionings. Indeed the whole universe seems to be organized, with pronounced structures starting from spiral galaxies down to living cells. Furthermore, very many of the most interesting phenomena occur in systems which are far from thermal equilibrium. Synergetics in its present form focusses its attention on those phenomena where dra matic changes occur on a macroscopic scale. Here indeed Synergetics was able to re veal profound analogies between systems in different disciplines ranging from physics to sociology. This volume contains contributions from various fields but the reader will easily discover their cOl11J1on goal. Not only in the natural sciences but also in ecology, sociology, and economy, man is confronted with the problems of complex sys tems. The principles and analogies unearthed by Synergetics will certainly be very he1pfu~ to cope with such difficult problems. I use this opportunity to thank the Vo1kswagenwerk Foundation for its support of the project Synergetics and in particular for sponsoring the International Workshop on Synergetics. 292 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -When I first considered writing a book about multipliers, it was my intention to produce a moderate sized monograph which covered the theory as a whole and which would be accessible and readable to anyone with a basic knowledge of functional and harmonic analysis. I soon realized, however, that such a goal could not be attained. This realization is apparent in the preface to the preliminary version of the present work which was published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Mathematics, Volume 105, and is even more acute now, after the revision, expansion and emendation of that manuscript needed to produce the present volume. Consequently, as before, the treatment given in the following pages is eclectric rather than definitive. The choice and presentation of the topics is certainly not unique, and reflects both my personal preferences and inadequacies, as well as the necessity of restricting the book to a reasonable size. Throughout I have given special emphasis to the func tional analytic aspects of the characterization problem for multipliers, and have, generally, only presented the commutative version of the theory. I have also, hopefully, provided too many details for the reader rather than too few.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 312 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This monograph deals with some of the latest results in nonlinear mechanics, obtained recently by the use of a modernized version of Bogoljubov's method of successive changes of variables which ensures rapid convergence. This method visualised as early as 1934 by Krylov and Bogoljubov provides an effective tool for solving many interesting problems of nonlinear mechanics. It led, in particular, to the solution of the problem of the existence of a quasi periodic regime, with the restriction that approximate solutions obtained in the general case involved divergent series. Recently, making use of the research of Kolmogorov and Arno'ld, Bogoljubov has modernised the method of successive substitutions in such a way that the convergence of the corresponding expansions is ensured. This book consists of a short Introduction and seven chapters. The first chapter presents the results obtained by BogoIjubov in 1963 on the extension of the method of successive substitutions and the study of quasi periodic solutions applied to non-conservative systems (inter alia making explicit the dependence of these solutions on the parameter, indicating methods of obtaining asymptotic and convergent series for them, etc.).Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 300 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Categorical methods of speaking and thinking are becoming more and more widespread in mathematics because they achieve a unifi cation of parts of different mathematical fields; frequently they bring simplifications and provide the impetus for new developments. The purpose of this book is to introduce the reader to the central part of category theory and to make the literature accessible to the reader who wishes to go farther. In preparing the English version, I have used the opportunity to revise and enlarge the text of the original German edition. Only the most elementary concepts from set theory and algebra are assumed as prerequisites. However, the reader is expected to be mathe to follow an abstract axiomatic approach. matically sophisticated enough The vastness of the material requires that the presentation be concise, and careful cooperation and some patience is necessary on the part of the reader. Definitions alway precede the examples that illuminate them, and it is assumed that the reader is familiar with some of the algebraic and topological examples (he should not let the other ones confuse him). It is also hoped that he will be able to explain the con cepts to himself and that he will recognize the motivation.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 404 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The present volume contains, together with numerous addition and extensions, the course of lectures which I gave at Pavia (26 September till 5 October 1955) by invitation of the «Centro Internazionale Mate matico Estivo». The treatment has the character of a monograph, and presents various novel features, both in form and in substance; these are indicated in the notes which will be found at the beginning and end of each chapter, Of the nine parts into which the work is divided, the first four are essentially differential in character, the next three deal with algebraic geometry, while the last two are concerned with certain aspects of the theory of differential equations and of correspondences between topo logical varieties. A glance at the index will suffice to give a more exact idea of the range and variety of the contents, whose chief characteristic is that of establishing suggestive and sometimes unforeseen relations between apparently diverse subjects (e. g. differential geometry in the small and also in the large, algebraic geometry, function theory, topo logy, etc. ); prominence is given throughout to the geometrical view point, and tedious calculations are as far as possible avoided. The exposition has been planned so that it can be followed without much difficulty even by readers who have no special knowledge of the subjects treated.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 216 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The axioms of a complex Banach algebra were very happily chosen. They are simple enough to allow wide ranging fields of application, notably in harmonic analysis, operator theory and function algebras. At the same time they are tight enough to allow the development of a rich collection of results, mainly through the interplay of the elementary parts of the theories of analytic functions, rings, and Banach spaces. Many of the theorems are things of great beauty, simple in statement, surprising in content, and elegant in proof. We believe that some of them deserve to be known by every mathematician. The aim of this book is to give an account of the principal methods and results in the theory of Banach algebras, both commutative and non commutative. It has been necessary to apply certain exclusion principles in order to keep our task within bounds. Certain classes of concrete Banach algebras have a very rich literature, namely C\*-algebras, function algebras, and group algebras. We have regarded these highly developed theories as falling outside our scope. We have not entirely avoided them, but have been concerned with their place in the general theory, and have stopped short of developing their special properties. For reasons of space and time we have omitted certain other topics which would quite naturally have been included, in particular the theories of multipliers and of extensions of Banach algebras, and the implications for Banach algebras of some of the standard algebraic conditions on rings.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 320 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Classical potential theory can be roughly characterized as the study of Newtonian potentials and the Laplace operator on the Euclidean space JR3. It was discovered around 1930 that there is a profound connection between classical potential 3 theory and the theory of Brownian motion in JR . The Brownian motion is determined by its semigroup of transition probabilities, the Brownian semigroup, and the connection between classical potential theory and the theory of Brownian motion can be described analytically in the following way: The Laplace operator is the infinitesimal generator for the Brownian semigroup and the Newtonian potential kernel is the' integral' of the Brownian semigroup with respect to time. This connection between classical potential theory and the theory of Brownian motion led Hunt (cf. Hunt [2]) to consider general 'potential theories' defined in terms of certain stochastic processes or equivalently in terms of certain semi groups of operators on spaces of functions. The purpose of the present exposition is to study such general potential theories where the following aspects of classical potential theory are preserved: (i) The theory is defined on a locally compact abelian group. (ii) The theory is translation invariant in the sense that any translate of a potential or a harmonic function is again a potential, respectively a harmonic function; this property of classical potential theory can also be expressed by saying that the Laplace operator is a differential operator with constant co efficients.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 212 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This volume is dedicated to the memory of Harry Ernest Rauch, who died suddenly on June 18, 1979. In organizing the volume we solicited: (i) articles summarizing Rauch's own work in differential geometry, complex analysis and theta functions (ii) articles which would give the reader an idea of the depth and breadth of Rauch's researches, interests, and influence, in the fields he investigated, and (iii) articles of high scientific quality which would be of general interest. In each of the areas to which Rauch made significant contribution - pinching theorems, teichmiiller theory, and theta functions as they apply to Riemann surfaces - there has been substantial progress. Our hope is that the volume conveys the originality of Rauch's own work, the continuing vitality of the fields he influenced, and the enduring respect for, and tribute to, him and his accom plishments in the mathematical community. Finally, it is a pleasure to thank the Department of Mathematics, of the Grad uate School of the City University of New York, for their logistical support, James Rauch who helped us with the biography, and Springer-Verlag for all their efforts in producing this volume. Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -15 Liapunov's 'second method' eliminates this drawback and leads to accurate conclusions regarding the stability of well-defined families of systems. This method made it natural to introduce the new notion of 'absolute stability' whose origin can be traced to a work of . A. I. Lur'e and V. N. Post nikov [1]. The results of the many investigations effected to date in the field of absolute stability have been presented in a number of monographs, from which we mention (in chrono logical order) . A. I. Lur'e [1], . A. M. Letov [1], . A. Halanay Fig. 1. 2 [1], M . . A . . Aizerman and F. R. Gantmacher [1] and S. Lef schetz [1]. Without going into a detailed exposition of these results (see the final chapter of this book), we shall discuss here only the manner in which one defines the families of systems that are studied. These systems are characterized by the fact that in Relation (4) - which describes the non-linear block B2 (Fig. 1. 1) - the function cp is continuous, vanishes for v = 0 and satisfies the inequality cp( v)v > 0 for every v =/= o. (6) In other words, the graph of function cp is entirely contained in the quadrants I and III; it may have, for instance, a shape similar to that shown in Fig. 1. 2. The object of the study of absolute stability consists in finding a criterion which secures simultaneously the stability of all the systems characterized by Condition (6) .Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 404 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This book is concerned with a set of related problems in probability theory that are considered in the context of Markov processes. Some of these are natural to consider, especially for Markov processes. Other problems have a broader range of validity but are convenient to pose for Markov processes. The book can be used as the basis for an interesting course on Markov processes or stationary processes. For the most part these questions are considered for discrete parameter processes, although they are also of obvious interest for continuous time parameter processes. This allows one to avoid the delicate measure theoretic questions that might arise in the continuous parameter case. There is an attempt to motivate the material in terms of applications. Many of the topics concern general questions of structure and representation of processes that have not previously been presented in book form. A set of notes comment on the many problems that are still left open and related material in the literature. It is also hoped that the book will be useful as a reference to the reader who would like an introduction to these topics as well as to the reader interested in extending and completing results of this type.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 292 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Integration in function spaces arose in probability theory when a gen eral theory of random processes was constructed. Here credit is cer tainly due to N. Wiener, who constructed a measure in function space, integrals-with respect to which express the mean value of functionals of Brownian motion trajectories. Brownian trajectories had previously been considered as merely physical (rather than mathematical) phe nomena. A. N. Kolmogorov generalized Wiener's construction to allow one to establish the existence of a measure corresponding to an arbitrary random process. These investigations were the beginning of the development of the theory of stochastic processes. A considerable part of this theory involves the solution of problems in the theory of measures on function spaces in the specific language of stochastic pro cesses. For example, finding the properties of sample functions is connected with the problem of the existence of a measure on some space; certain problems in statisticsreduce to the calculation of the density of one measure w. r. t. another one, and the study of transformations of random processes leads to the study of transformations of function spaces with measure. One must note that the language of probability theory tends to obscure the results obtained in these areas for mathematicians working in other fields. Another dir, ection leading to the study of integrals in function space is the theory and application of differential equations. A. N.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 200 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -About 10 years ago, the first very small steps towards this book were taken. The starting point was marked by the deep and sudden slump of the Swiss economy in the mid-seventies: a crisis wiping out about 10 percentage points of GNP and employment within just two years. To this writer, it was clear from the beginning that neither the exogenous shocks nor the struc tural changes were in fact exogenous or structural. They were given and sha ped by global forces. They were part and parcel of capitalist development. There is no other highly developed country in the world which is so ex tremely and integrally exposed to world-wide currents of financial and economic changes as Switzerland. The degree and dimensions of open ness ofthe Swiss economy led to the formulation of our research approach for studying the internationalization of the economy, a topic theoretically and politically developed in this book. Empirical evidence relates to our study of Swiss experience. A well-known Swiss-American economist offered the following com ment on our previous work on the internationalization of industry: 'You are very good in raising interesting questions .' What was undoubtedly meant as a criticism was received as a compliment. Too much talent and too many research efforts are, in my opinion, wasted by research programs which place technique over substance. This unfortunate development in our profession has already greatly reduced the social utility of economists.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 192 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Geometrical (in particular, topological) methods in nonlinear analysis were originally invented by Banach, Birkhoff, Kellogg, Schauder, Leray, and others in existence proofs. Since about the fifties, these methods turned out to be essentially the sole approach to a variety of new problems: the investigation of iteration processes and other procedures in numerical analysis, in bifur cation problems and branching of solutions, estimates on the number of solutions and criteria for the existence of nonzero solutions, the analysis of the structure of the solution set, etc. These methods have been widely applied to the theory of forced vibrations and auto-oscillations, to various problems in the theory of elasticity and fluid. mechanics, to control theory, theoretical physics, and various parts of mathematics. At present, nonlinear analysis along with its geometrical, topological, analytical, variational, and other methods is developing tremendously thanks to research work in many countries. Totally new ideas have been advanced, difficult problems have been solved, and new applications have been indicated. To enumerate the publications of the last few years one would need dozens of pages. On the other hand, many problems of non linear analysis are still far from a solution (problems arising from the internal development of mathematics and, in particular, problems arising in the process of interpreting new problems in the natural sciences). We hope that the English edition of our book will contribute to the further propagation of the ideas of nonlinear analysis.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 436 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Due to the fundamental role of differential equations in science and engineering it has long been a basic task of numerical analysts to generate numerical values of solutions to differential equations. Nearly all approaches to this task involve a 'finitization' of the original differential equation problem, usually by a projection into a finite-dimensional space. By far the most popular of these finitization processes consists of a reduction to a difference equation problem for functions which take values only on a grid of argument points. Although some of these finite difference methods have been known for a long time, their wide applica bility and great efficiency came to light only with the spread of electronic computers. This in tum strongly stimulated research on the properties and practical use of finite-difference methods. While the theory or partial differential equations and their discrete analogues is a very hard subject, and progress is consequently slow, the initial value problem for a system of first order ordinary differential equations lends itself so naturally to discretization that hundreds of numerical analysts have felt inspired to invent an ever-increasing number of finite-difference methods for its solution. For about 15 years, there has hardly been an issue of a numerical journal without new results of this kind; but clearly the vast majority of these methods have just been variations of a few basic themes. In this situation, the classical text book by P.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 412 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -Owing to the developments and applications of computer science, ma thematicians began to take a serious interest in the applications of number theory to numerical analysis about twenty years ago. The progress achieved has been both important practically as well as satisfactory from the theoretical view point. It'or example, from the seventeenth century till now, a great deal of effort was made in developing methods for approximating single integrals and there were only a few works on multiple quadrature until the 1950's. But in the past twenty years, a number of new methods have been devised of which the number theoretic method is an effective one. The number theoretic method may be described as follows. We use num ber theory to construct a sequence of uniformly distributed sets in the s dimensional unit cube G , where s ~ 2. Then we use the sequence to s reduce a difficult analytic problem to an arithmetic problem which may be calculated by computer. For example, we may use the arithmetic mean of the values of integrand in a given uniformly distributed set of G to ap s proximate the definite integral over G such that the principal order of the s error term is shown to be of the best possible kind, if the integrand satis fies certain conditions.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 260 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -This book is written by a mathematician and a theoretical biologist who have arrived at a good mutual understanding and a well worked-out common notation. The reader need hardly be convinced of the necessity of such a mutual understanding, not only for the two investigators, but also for the sciences they represent. Like Moliere's hero, geneticists are gradually beginning to understand that, unknowingly, they have been speaking in the language of cybernetics. Mathematicians are unexpec tedly discovering that many past and present problems and methods of genetics can be naturally formulated in the language of graph theory. In this way a powerful abstract mathematical theory suddenly finds a productive application. Moreover, in its turn, such an application be gins to 'feed' the mathematical theory by presenting it with a number of new problems. The reader may judge for himself the fruitfulness of such mutual interaction. At the same time several important circumstances need to be men tioned. The formalization and rigorous formulation given here embraces not only the older problems, known by geneticists for many decades (the construction of genetic maps, the analysis of complementation, etc. ), but also comparatively new problems: the construction of partial com plementation maps, phylogenetic trees of proteins, etc.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 220 pp. Englisch.

This has frequently been done at the expense of a literal translation of the original text and it is felt that such liberties as have been taken with the author's language are justified in the interest of ease in readingo None of us pretends to be an authority in the Russian language, and we trust that the original intent of the authors has not been lost. The equations, whieh were for the most part taken verbatim from the original work, were eheeked only eursorily; obvious and previously noted errors have been eorreeted. Fortunately, the Russian and English mathematieal notations are generally in good agreement. An exeeption is the shortened abbreviations for the hyperbolie functions (e.g. sh for sinh), and the symbol Jm rather that Im to denote the imaginary part. As near as possible, these diserepaneies have been correeted. In preparing the Bibliography, works having an English equivalent have been translated into the English title, but in the text the referenee to the Russian work was retained, as it was impraetieal to attempt to find in eaeh ease the eorresponding eitation in the English edition. Authors' names and titles associated with purely Russian works have been transliterated as nearly as possible to the English equivalent, along with the equivalent English title of the work cited.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 348 pp. Englisch.

Neuware -In spite of ingenious experiments, imaginative theories, and unshakable faith in supreme forces, there is no way to know how life began. What is certain is that in the course of the development of the universe existing sources of energy fused to generate atoms, and atoms mingled to become small molecules. At some point by chance or design-according to one's belief, but no one's evidence-small molecules such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water, and ammonia reacted to yield larger molecules with the property most essential to life: self-replication. Such molecules had to achieve a proper balance between the stability needed for their survival in the environment and the mutability for the generation of many forms of life. How amino acids were created or how DNA, RNA, and proteins developed remains a mystery. But we know that a simple core of nucleic acid embedded in a protein coat made the simplest unit of life (except for viroids). Whether viruses are a primitive or degenerated form of life is not known. Once proteins appeared, their great structural plasticity allowed them to react with other elements such as sulfur, iron, copper, and zinc. After an incalculable number of years, some of the proteins became capable of catalyzing the synthesis of new nucleic acids, new proteins, and other compounds such as polysaccharides and lipids.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 652 pp. Englisch.

Bakelman was an expert in the study of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations by methods of differential and convex geometry. In Russia he is also recognized as a reformer of mathematical education at both school and university levels. This book represents much of Bakelman's work of the last ten years (until his death in 1992). Much of his work was devoted to boundary value problems for mean curvature and Monge-Ampere equations in more than two variables and their generalizations. The book is suitable as a text book and reference work for graduate students and scientists (mathematicians but also physicists) working in the areas of convex functions and bodies, global geometric problems and nonlinear elliptic boundary value problems.Springer-Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 536 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - Print on Demand Titel. Neuware -The subject. The phrase 'integral operator' (like some other mathematically informal phrases, such as 'effective procedure' and 'geometric construction') is sometimes defined and sometimes not. When it is defined, the definition is likely to vary from author to author. While the definition almost always involves an integral, most of its other features can vary quite considerably. Superimposed limiting operations may enter (such as L2 limits in the theory of Fourier transforms and principal values in the theory of singular integrals), IJ' spaces and abstract Banach spaces may intervene, a scalar may be added (as in the theory of the so-called integral operators of the second kind), or, more generally, a multiplication operator may be added (as in the theory of the so-called integral operators of the third kind). The definition used in this book is the most special of all. According to it an integral operator is the natural 'continuous' generali zation of the operators induced by matrices, and the only integrals that appear are the familiar Lebesgue-Stieltjes integrals on classical non-pathological mea sure spaces. The category. Some of the flavor of the theory can be perceived in finite dimensional linear algebra. Matrices are sometimes considered to be an un natural and notationally inelegant way of looking at linear transformations. From the point of view of this book that judgement misses something.Springer-Verlag KG, Sachsenplatz 4-6, 1201 Wien 156 pp. Englisch.
