Ther m…odynamics and statistical mechanics were used successful ly as bridges and guides to get the new ideas to conform to the macroscopic experiences (measurements). Hence the dis 3 interest of theoreticians. The frustration in attracting the at tention of the working physicists on this problem is vividly described in Carnap's (1978) account on the reception of his ideas and efforts at the Institute of Advanced Studies at Prin ceton where he worked on the Two Essays on Entropy; it al most amounted, he thought, to a conspiracy of silence. The priorities of theoretical physicists remain with the puzzles and the cranking at hand: Quantum Field Theory (QFT) and 'creation and annihilation' physics, solid state physics, - to mention only a few research areas - command the attention of those working on the research frontiers. Thermodynamics is taken for granted and is thought to be an almost depleted research area. Whatever the subterfuges, the hand-waving arguments, the paedagogical red herrings, the procedures work and nothing can be gained by allocating intellectual re sources to resolve ambiguities with few, if any, expected rewards. Down deep, all believe that the regularization of the field will one day be accomplished.

The Tetrobot approach utilizes modular components which may be reconfigured into many different mechanisms which are suited to different applications. The Tetrobot system includes two unique contributions: a new mechanism (a multilink spherical joint design), and a new control architecture based on propagation of kinematic solutions through the structure. The resulting Tetrobot system consists of fundamental components which may be mechanically reassembled into any modular configuration, and the control architecture will provide position control of the resulting structure. A prototype Tetrobot system has been built and evaluated experimentally. Tetrobot arms, platforms, and walking machines have been built and controlled in a variety of motion and loading conditions. The Tetrobot system has applications in a variety of domains where reconfiguration, flexibility, load capacity, and failure recovery are important aspects of the task. A number of key research directions have been opened by the Tetrobot research activities. Continuing topics of interest include: development of a more distributed implementation of the computer control architecture, analysis of the dynamics of the Tetrobot system motion for improved control of high-speed motions, integration of sensor systems to control the motion and shape of the high-dimensionality systems, and exploration of self-reconfiguration of the system. Tetrobot: A Modular Approach to Reconfigurable Parallel Robotics will be of interest to research workers, specialists and professionals in the areas of robotics, mechanical systems and computer engineering.

By our best knowledge, the book is a first attempt to present the rather complex subject of partial differential equations (PDEs for short) through active reader-participation. Thus this book is a combination of theory and examples. In the theory of PDEs, on one hand, one has an interplay of several mathematical disciplines, including the theories of analytical functions, harmonic analysis, ODEs, topology and last, but not least, functional analysis, while on the other hand there are various methods, tools and approaches. In view of that, the exposition of new notions and methods in our book is 'step by step'. A minimal amount of expository theory is included at the beginning of each section Preliminaries with maximum emphasis placed on well selected examples and exercises capturing the essence of the material. Actually, we have divided the problems into two classes termed Examples and Exercises (often containing proofs of the statements from Preliminaries). The examples contain complete solutions, and also serve as a model for solving similar problems, given in the exercises. The readers are left to find the solution in the exercises; the answers, and occasionally, some hints, are still given. The book is implicitly divided in two parts, classical and abstract. 420 pp. Englisch.

The German original was pub lished posthumously in 1973 as Volume XVI of Husserliana, Husserl's opera omnia. The transla…tion is complete, including both the main text and the supplementary texts (as Husserliana volumes are usually organized), except for the critical apparatus which provides variant readings. The announced title of the lecture course was 'Main parts of the phenome nology and critique of reason.' The course began with five, relatively inde pendent, introductory lectures. These were published on their own in 1947, bearing the title The idea ojphenomenology.l The 'Five Lectures' comprise a general orientation by proposing the method to be employed in the subsequent working out of the actual problems (viz., the method of 'phenomenological reduction') and by clarifying, at least provisionally, some technical terms that will be used in the labor the subsequent lectures will carry out. The present volume, then, presents that labor, i.e., the method in action and the results attained. As such, this text dispels the abstract impression which could not help but cling to the first five lectures taken in isolation. Accord ingly, we are here given genuine 'introductory lectures,' i.e., an introduction to phenomenology in the genuine phenomenological sense of engaging in the work of phenomenology, going to the 'matters at issue themselves,' rather than remaining aloof from them in abstract considerations of standpoint and approach. 386 pp. Englisch.

It is an example of a comple…tely integrable PDE where phase space structure is known in some detail. In this monograph the authors present detailed and pedagogic proofs of persistence theorems for normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds and their stable and unstable manifolds for classes of perturbations of the NLS equation. The existence and persistence of fibrations of these invariant manifolds is also proved. The authors' techniques are based on an infinite dimensional generalization of the graph transform and can be viewed as an infinite dimensional generalization of Fenichel's results. This book also shows that the authors' techniques are quite general and can be applied to a broad class of infinite dimensional dynamical systems. 188 pp. Englisch.
