Paper Back. Condición: New. The sub-headings of the selections from The Triads presented here -- apophatic theology as a positive experience; the hesychast method of prayer and the transformation of the body; deification in Christ; the uncreated Glory; the essence and energies of God -- really not only describe the work itself, but also the very contours of Orthodox theology. Palamas' importance is immeasurable in the East, and his rediscovery by the Christian West (due in large part to Meyendorff) bodes well for a re-convergence of vision missing from relations between the two for a millennium. Introduction by John Meyendorff, preface by Jaroslav Pelikan.

Paper Back. Condición: New. Read chapter 18 of this manual, ''On Insensitivity,'' and experience honest terror; or chapter 28, ''On Prayer,'' and be reminded how limited and solitary our conception of prayer is, when we come across the following: ''Prayer is by nature a dialog and a union of man with God. Its effect is to hold the world together (emphasis ours). prayer is the mother and daughter of tears.'' The work of the seventh-century abbot of St. Catherine's Monastery on Mt. Sinai, The Ladder is probably the single most important text in the spiritual literature of Eastern Christendom. Read in monastic refectories and churches every year during Lent, The Ladder is a text of utmost seriousness and earnestness. Psychological subterfuge and self-delusion are surgically stripped away, leaving the reader two choices: run away or repent. Introduction by Bishop Kallistos Ware.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware -'.clearly a must for all libraries.and for all readers interested in spirituality.' Religious Studies Review Early Dominicans: Selected Writings edited with an introduction by Simon Tugwell, O.P. [reface buy Father Vincent de Couesnongle, O.P. 'He [Dominic] thought he would only really be a member of Christ's Body when he could spend himself utterly with all his strength in the winning of souls, just as the Saviour of us all, the Lord Jesus, gave himself up entirely for our salvation.' Jordan of Saxony (d. 1237) The spirituality of St. Dominic and his early followers was a dynamic force in thirteenth-century Europe. In this volume the writings of Dominic's early disciples are presented in a fresh, lively translation by Simon Tugwell, O.P., of Blackfriars, Oxford. The simplicity, ruggedness, and clarity of the Dominicans' biblically-based, Christ-centered spirituality is illustrated in Jean de Mailly's Life of St. Dominic, The Nine Ways of Prayer of St. Dominic, and the writings of Jordan of Saxony, Peter of Rheims, Thomas Agni, and Robert Kilwardby. The importance of preaching in the Dominican tradition is reflected in the book's main selection, Humbert of Romans' Treatise on the Formation of Preachers. The breadth of Dominican piety represented by these selections and the fine preface by the Master of the Order of Preachers, Father Vincent de Couesnongle, O.P., plus Tugwell's brilliant introduction, called by Spirituality Today 'the best treatise on Dominican spirituality now available,' combine in making this a truly classic volume. + 528 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - 'This series is a testimony to the Spirit breathing where He wills.' America John Climacus: The Ladder of Divine Ascent edited and translated by Colm Luibheid and Norman Russell notes on translation by Norman Russell, preface by Kallistos Ware 'Prayer is the mother and daughter of tears. It is an expiation of sin, a bridge across temptation, a bulwark against affliction. It wipes out conflict, is the work of angels, and is the nourishment of everything spiritual.' John Climacus (c. 579-649) The Ladder of Divine Ascent was the most widely used handbook of the ascetic life in the ancient Greek Church. Popular among both lay and monastics, it was translated into Latin, Syriac, Arabic, Armenian, Old Slavonic, and many modern languages. It was written while the author (who received his surname from this book) was abbot of the monastery of Catherine on Mount Sinai. As reflected in the title, the ascetical life is portrayed as a ladder which each aspirant must ascend, each step being a virtue to be acquired, or a vice to be surrendered. Its thirty steps reflect the hidden life of Christ himself. This work had a fundamental influence in the particularly the Hesychastic, Jesus Prayer, or Prayer of the Heart movement. Pierre Pourrat in his History of Christian Spirituality calls John Climacus the 'most important ascetical theologian of the East, at this epoch, who enjoyed a great reputation and exercised and important influence on future centuries.' +.

Religious Studies Review Early Dominicans: Selected Writings edited with an introduction by Simon Tugwell, O.P. + 528 pp. Englisch.
