Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Magic! Some people love magicians. They don't want to know the secrets; they revel in the mystery! Other people only just tolerate illusionists because they get frustrated if they cant work out the secrets! In some circles, however, 'magic' is a dirty word. It is associated with evil, and the occult. Even stage magicians are looked at suspiciously.Jim Reiher began his hobby of doing magic when he was a boy. After a decade or so, when he was about 20, he met some 'extreme fundamentalist Christians' who were sure that his hobby of 'slight of hand' was really a sinful past-time, done in league with the Devil. This lighthearted book tells us the story of Jim's journey with his hobby of magic. It also reflects on his encounters with folk who thought he was sinning against God and mankind, and his survival through those encounters. He gives the reader practical tips for how to avoid (or at least not be pulled down by) such encounters and traumas. He also shares different skills and tips for how to be a successful performer. For the Christian reader, the most important thing this book communicates, is to find your special gifting, your talent, your unique ability - and to pursue it with all your might! Jim encourages the reader not to be 'put off' by anyone who tries to smoother their dreams or their gifts. He calls for graciousness and co-existence.In the midst of it all, Jim shares some of his favorite card tricks (with the secrets); he shares the way to combine magic with clowning (for those so inclined); and he demonstrates ways to turn a magic trick, into a vehicle for sharing a meaningful message. Jim also tackles head-on, criticisms leveled against the popular 'Harry Potter' stories, and he calls on fundamentalists to put the fun back into their fundamentalism. An easy and enjoyable read that will inspire you to do what you love, despite the critics. …

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Women and men are equal right Really How about if a woman believes she should be working towards leadership in the Church Can a women be a Minister or Senior Pastor: can she be a Bishop Can a woman be a leader who teaches both men and women from the pulpit Christians over the centuries have more often than not, suppressed women in the church. All kinds of clever phrases have been used to help prop up the male dominated structures: women are equal, they just have different roles; women are ordained by God to be under the covering of men; a woman cant be over her husband on a Sunday and then the husband over her for the rest of the week - that couldn't work could it!; etc. It gets worse as well: women wanting to 'usurp' men's leadership roles have a Jezebel spirit!; they are angry feminists clearly not at peace with God or others. you have heard it before I am sure!Jim Reiher takes a serious look at just what the Bible says - and what it does not say - in this easy to read and incredibly informative book on the topic. Reiher looks at every main verse and story in the Old and New Testaments that impact on women and leadership. It might surprise you to hear that he comes out with a consistent message from the whole Bible. He shows that the Bible is actually pro-women and men sharing leadership together. He argues that God gives gifts in the church according to God's good pleasure and will, and not according to gender. From the creation of man and woman in Genesis 1 to the start of the Church after the resurrection and at Pentecost, the constant reminder is that God wants 'sons and daughters' to exercise gifts in the church (Acts 2), and he wants 'men and women both' to rule the earth (Genesis 1).Jim looks at all the verses: those that affirm equality for women (like Gal 3:28) but also those that seem to restrict women in leadership roles (like 1 Tim 2:12). He shows that the verses that appear to limit women's roles, have been misunderstood, or taken out of context, or distorted to say things they never said. By the end of this book he has put together a consistent and recurring demonstration that all of the Bible affirms men and women should do whatever God gifts them to do. And if that is leadership in the church, so be it.Okay: you now know where this author stands and where he is going to try to take you. Are you up for the challenge If you disagree with his view are you willing to let him try to convince you If you agree, you will find some extra convincing arguments to help you talk to others.A terrific read on a very important topic.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'The Prisoner' recounts the Life of the Apostle Paul, in a fresh and different way. Paul's life story is shared through various conversations he has with visitors as they come to see him in his prison in Rome. This historical fiction is set late in Paul's life - mostly during his 'first' Roman imprisonment. Paul was a Roman citizen and so he did have some rights. He could keep a 'slave' (Luke, his friend) and he had considerable freedom to see visitors. The life of Paul is shared with the reader, in a patchwork mosaic. The reader becomes a bit of an 'eavesdropper' on the very private and detailed conversations Paul has with dear friends. Paul's deepest feelings and his reflections on moral and theological topics are shared through this framework. As different visitors come to him, they reminisce about their times together. Through this story the reader not only comes to know Paul better, but also meets other New Testament characters as well (Luke, Mark, Simon-Peter, Timothy, Prisca, and numerous others). As memories are shared, we also hear the tragic stories of the murders of Barnabas (the early disciple who helped Paul into ministry) and James (the brother of Jesus). The life of Paul is historical fiction and so there is an element of poetic licence that the writer has used to create the story. For the readers who are inclined to want to know just what is actual history and what is speculation, the author provides a useful Appendix at the end of the book. It gives the historical evidence for some parts of the story, and admits to when certain things were just 'made up' to flesh out the narrative. He does argue, however, that even the 'made up' parts are possible.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The story behind the Book of Acts has never been told in such a way before. Full of poetry, skits, mimes, jokes and riddles, magic tricks and juggling - it is still very much a clear and detailed retelling of the Book of Acts. All these features of this historical fiction add color and laughter to this wonderful story. The book has a clown disciple of Jesus now travelling with Peter and Paul. 'Splinter' the clown, records the events he witnesses through the lens of a clown. All the stories of Acts are retold in that way. This is not just an entertaining way of reading that New Testament book - it is a creative expression in itself, that inspires the reader to embrace their own uniqueness and their own special talents and gifting, and to use that with enthusiasm and passion. What adds a whole other dimension to this story is that we are not simply reading a fun filled 'dance' through the Book of Acts. We are also getting a cleverly written commentary on that Biblical book at the same time. Splinter's reflections on the much loved stories (Peter's escape from prison; Paul's conversion on the road to Damascus; the great shipwreck near the end of the book; etc), as well as the 'difficult' passages (Ananias and Sapphira's deaths; the argument between Paul and Barnabas; and more) is heartfelt and compelling. The author has a clever way of forcing us to reflect on deep theological insights - without us even knowing that we are doing so.The entertaining illustrations by artist Glenn Hibburt break up the text and add another dimension of color and laughter to the story. This is definitely the most fun way imaginable to read the incredible stories of the Book of Acts.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - 'Prosperity Teaching' still has its teachers and its followers in numerous churches today. There is a massive gulf between such teaching and the words and actions of Jesus Christ. Nevertheless some who claim to follow Jesus actually teach that we should be materially rich. They teach that God wants us to be rich. In fact if we are not rich we are missing opportunities to serve God more fully. Or worse: we are failing, lacking faith, not walking as God wants us to.Jim Reiher carefully and graciously dismantles such teaching. He gently shows that such teaching is completely out of sync with the Bible - especially Jesus. He shows that people who teach prosperity teaching are anchored for the most part in the Old Covenant and have failed to understand what Jesus did in bringing in the New Covenant. Prosperity teachers misuse scripture after scripture, or fragment of scripture after fragment of scripture, as they pull words out of context and apply a totally alien meaning to them. From the Proverbs to the Gospels to the letters to Revelation, Jim carefully takes us through the scriptures with convicting clarity. He exhorts us to stop re-working Jesus to be just like us, but rather he challenges us to change ourselves to be more like Jesus.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Book of Acts in the New Testament tells the story of the earliest days of the new Church, after the death and resurrection of Jesus. Luke, the author of the Gospel by that name, pens this second volume to continue the story of the first Christians. It is a remarkable book that spans 30 years and tells us most of what we know about the early Apostles and their exploits. We especially get the stories of Simon-Peter and the Apostle Paul.Jim Reiher re-tells the story of Acts in 60 short devotional reflections. He works through the book of Acts, stopping here and there in each chapter, and pausing. and he reflects on the story, or a saying, or a phrase in the text. Jim has a knack for finding remarkably relevant moments in the story. These stories happened 2000 years ago, and yet there are lessons in them, reflections in them, that speak to our times. That speak to our day and age. There are stories where people of one religion stand up for and defend people from another religion; there are stories where people are facing grave injustice, and we see how they respond; there are stories where people help the poor; stand up for the oppressed; accept less than fair situations for the sake of a greater cause. all that and more.Jim Reiher will challenge you, stretch you, bless you, and make you uncomfortable, at different times throughout the studies. He does not shy from asking hard questions to the church today. His devotional commentary will take you further in your own life journey. This book is a wonderful tool for personal devotion, and reflection, and it can also be used for small groups as they study the book of Acts together.…

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The Epistle of James has often been described as a loose collection of 'pearls on a string'. A kind of New Testament Book of Proverbs. Jim Reiher shows us that there is much more to this rather small letter near the end of the New Testament. It does have wonderful truths sometimes captured briefly and memorably. But it is also a letter with a serious side. There was a problem that needed attention in the days it was written. Jewish Christians (the people James wrote to) were faced with a huge dilemma. There was much injustice and poverty and cruelty in the world. (Sounds like today!). There was corruption and violence and theft and murders. James the author was writing before the war with Rome that began in AD 66. In the late 40's and into the 50's there were the growing zealot movements, and much distress and uncertainty in Palestine. Jewish Christians were being tempted to resort to the ways of the world (violence and murder) in their response to injustice and poverty. James is horrified! He calls on his readers to stay faithful to 'true religion' - to care for those in need, yes, but not to be polluted by the ways of the world at the same time! He calls on them to seek justice and to do good, but not to become like the world in that quest. Stay Christ-like and care for the poor and suffering with patience and peacemaking, as your traits. Jim Reiher unpacks this much loved letter and shows us the wonderful exhortations to remain like the one we say we follow.…
