Soft cover. Condición: Very Good. No Jacket. In Hebrew. 16 leaves. 20 x 16 cm. Joseph Ben Solomon Calahora (called Joseph Darshan ; 1601-1696), rabbi and author. Calahora was born in Posen, and was a grandson of Israel Samuel b. Solomon Calahorra. He lived in Belaya Tserkov, where he witnessed the suffering of the Jews in 1648, at the time of the Chmielnicki pogroms. After returning to his home town, he served there as rabbi, but lived the later years of his life as an ascetic, devoting all his time to study. He wrote Yesod Yosef (Frankfurt on the Main, 1679; published with additions in Berlin, 1739; frequently republished). This small ethical work became one of the most popular ethical writings in Eastern Europe. It instructs the reader as to what life to lead in order to avoid nocturnal emission, which was considered a sin, and how to cleanse himself if it did happen. He uses the sin as a motif to build a complete system of Jewish ethics and purity, based on the Kabbalah. The book is supplemented by a collection of notes on different subjects and quotations from old sources by R. Joseph b. Gei. A commentary on it by Raphael Unna of Morocco appeared under the title Yesod Ma'aravi (Jerusalem, 1896). There has also been published his Sedeh Bokhim, containing homiletic explanations to the Perek Shirah and the tikkun ḥazot and miscellaneous writings of his brother, Isaac Lelower (Frankfurt on the Oder, 1679). A responsum of his is mentioned in *Eliakim Goetz b. Meir's Even ha-Shoham (Dyhernfurth, 1735). Several of his homiletical treatises remain in manuscript.…

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 2nd Edition. In Hebrew. 232 pages. 205 x 160 mm. Shaar Ora, a work roughly contemporaneous with the publication of the Zohar, was written by the Spanish kabbalist Joseph Gikatilla towards the end of the 13th century. It has served countless generations of aspiring students as a systematic primer guide of Kabbalah, to the systematic study of the Sefiroth (Divine emanations) and their code names, with Malchuth (Kingdom) as the primary, and Keter (Crown) as the final Sefirah. It is an exposition of Kabbalistic symbolism and the designations of the Sephorith. Joseph Gikatilla (Chiquatilla) (1248- c.1325) was a disciple of the founder of the school of "Prophetic kabbalah," Abraham Abulafia, and a close colleague of Moses de Leon of Guadalajara (who publicized the Zohar). Gikatilla composed some of the most detailed, yet lucid, expositions of Kabblistic concepts. Indeed R. Chaim of Volozhin recommended it to his students as an important introduction to the arcane wisdom of Kabbalah. Gikatilla was the originator of the doctrine equating the infinite Ein Sof with the first of the Ten Sephiroth. Vinograd THESAURUS v. 2, page 10, Offenbach imprint number 13 (kabala). Very good modern full leather binding with raised bands and gilt lettering on spine. Remains of old marbled paper on the earlier binding are bound in. 116 leaves. Scan of the wrappers and of the leather boards is available upon request. This second edition is apparently much rarer than the first edition.…
