Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This text is an extract from a book arguing for free trade in corn. At the time of writing, land was seen as a very important investment that could only increase in value. This book argues that this is not the case and points to the fact that there has been very little increase in the value of land since 1815. Rather than restricting trade to protect the landed gentry, the author argues that free trade would allow Britain to flourish and keep up with her rivals, such as the USA and Germany. This would benefit everyone in the long run, even the landowners. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This work of economic policy is a letter written in 1839 by the author to the Manchester Chamber of Commerce. The author argues that the existing Corn Laws are a 'blot on our escutcheon' and a dangerous and unjust policy that artificially inflates food prices to the detriment of the poor and to the impoverishment of the country. The author suggests that the Corn Laws are a product of the aristocratic nature of British institutions and the undue influence of the landed interest in both houses of Parliament. The author argues further that the Corn Laws do not protect the interests of farmers and that they ultimately lead to a decline in the agricultural sector. The author further argues that the Corn Laws lead not only to economic hardship for the poor but also endanger the security of national institutions and the peace of the community. The author concludes by urging the reader to support the repeal of the Corn Laws and to work towards a fairer and more equitable system.
