It argues that the second half of the century saw a dramatic shift in how the body was viewed, moving away from ancient models toward an "enlightened" ideal of physical improvement and self-mastery. The central thesis is that the 18th-century body became a site of "improvement" where individuals used new technologies to align their physical forms with social ideals of politeness, elegance, and health. The "Polite Body": Politeness in this era was not just about manners; it was projected onto the physical body, which was expected to appear neat, elegant, and "natural". Technological Intervention: The book examines how people used "technologies of the body" to conceal deformities and manage their surfaces to convey a harmonious whole. The Role of Cast Steel: Withey identifies cast steel (introduced around 1750) as a pivotal "enlightened metal" that allowed for the creation of more refined, durable, and intimate instruments, such as better razors, spectacles, and surgical tools. Shift in Morality: By the mid-1700s, altering the body was no longer viewed as a taboo "meddling with God's work" but as a noble endeavour in self-control and social success.
