Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book presents in-depth research into a core element of Jewish practice and Christian doctrine: sacrifice. The author examines the Old Testament to demonstrate God's ordinance of sacrifice for the Jewish people, as well as the sacrificial system's purpose as a representation of Christ's ultimate sacrifice. The book also delves into the history of the concept of sacrifice, exploring its origins and the many different theories surrounding it. The author provides an exhaustive analysis of types of sacrifices, ceremonies, and the roles of priests, the Tabernacle, and the Temple. The book concludes by highlighting the significance of Jesus' ultimate sacrifice as the fulfillment of all sacrifices that came before, a pivotal event in understanding the relationship between God and humanity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

De sacrificiis libri duo microform : quorum altero explicantur omnia Judæorum, nonnulla gentium profanarum sacrificia : altero sacrificium Christi : utroque ecclesiæ Catholicæ his de rebus sententia contra Faustum Socinum, ejúsque sectatores defenditur / autore Guilielmo Outramo . Londini : Typis T. Roycroft, impensis Richardi Chiswell 1677. small 4to, Full old calf in nice condition, save for lacking spine, internally clean and complete. Highly important anti-Trinitarian text. Very Rare. No copies at auction in 30 years. Unitarians can trace their roots back to the 16th Century. The belief spread from Poland, to what was then Transylvania (Romania), through England and on to America where it especially thrived in New England. Michael Servetus seems to be considered the founder of the movement. Servetus a Roman Catholic Spanish physician escaped from the inquisition in France and went to Geneva. Here in 1553 he was burned alive after a three-month trial into his anti-Trinitarian beliefs. "Servetus discovered that in the uncorrupted Greek New Testament there was no text to justify the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. He published two books arguing that Christians should bring their views of God and Jesus into conformity with Jewish and Muslim monotheism. Hence the word "Unitarian" -- God as unity, or one" - Canadian Unitarian Council Website. These beliefs sometimes known as Sabellianism were to become known as Socianism after Italian born Faustus Socinus. He developed anti-Trinitarian belief into a more organised teaching. At this time he was living in Poland and his followers were sometimes called the Minor Reformed Church. Forced out of Poland again by persecution many merged with the Unitarians in Transylvania and from there the belief spread to England. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, leaders of the American Revolution, were all Unitarians. Interestingly, this book also contains one of the earliest appearances of the word Holocaust, lending to the interesting debate surrounding its etymology. It is present here in a religious sense of sacrificial offering.

Re-backed preserving original sprinkled calf boards. Upper corner of rear cover restored. End papers are renewed with quality laid paper after period style. Interior is clean. An inscription written in an old hand on a front blank leaf reads: "Ex domo Authoris Maii 4. 1677" (From the house of the author, May 4. 1677). William Owtram (1625-1679) was an English conformist theologian known for his great skill in rabbinical learning. In 1669 Owtram became Archdeacon of Leicester and in 1670 he was made Prebendary of Westminster (1670). Richard Baxter spoke of him as " one of the best and ablest of the conformists." [DNB]. Owtram is mainly known for his learned work "De Sacrificiis libri duo" an in depth study of religious ritual sacrifice. The book is divided into two parts; part 1 treats of ritual sacrifice in general and of the Biblical Hebrew rituals in particular. The sacrificial practices of the Gentiles are also mentioned. Part 2 discusses the Christian concept of sacrifice in reference to the death of Christ on the cross. The entire work was written in large part to counter the Socinian (early Unitarian) concept that Christ's death was not atonement for humanity's sins. Owtram defends the doctrine of atonement through vicarious punishment in both Hebrew and Christian scriptures. He argues that Christ's death was an expiatory sacrifice which took away the sins of mankind. The book was also influential in Dutch Socinian debates. Two later editions were printed in Amsterdam Of interest for Restoration Anglican history and for the history of Socinianism and Unitarianism. [ESTC R7355; McAlpin III, p. 754; Lowndes p. 1742].

Light wear to extremities, scratches to boards. Internally nice and clean. (6), 206, (2) pp. The uncommon first edition, posthumously published, of William Outram?s sermons. It was stated that these discourses had been taken down in shorthand, but they are not genuine. In order to do justice to his memory, his relatives caused 'Twenty Sermons preached upon several occasions' to be published from 'the author's own copies,' by James Gardiner, D.D., afterwards bishop of Lincoln (2nd ed., corrected, London, 1697, 8vo).? William Outram (1626 ? 1679) was an English nonconformist minister, puritan and writer. His works often addressed issues such as predestination, the nature of God, and the role of faith in salvation.
