There is no dust jacket). Random House printed 1961, First edition printed in Great Britain 1962 According to the American College Dictionary, terror "implies an intense fear which is somewhat prolonged and may refer to imagined or future dangers." When Alfred Hitchcock chooses stories to arouse terror, he is meticulously faithful to this definition. Does a haunted house frighten you? A contest between a man and a rat? Possession? Witchcraft? Does your blood chill when you think of someone being deliberately driven mad? How about a man who becomes half man, half fly? How about a tree that screams when you cut it down? Or a room that shrieks when no one is in it? Alfred Hitchcock has chosen twenty-one stories, two novelettes, and a complete novel guaranteed to terrify most normal people and even some abnormal ones. As everyone knows, he is a specialist in the macabre and bizarre. Asked to explain his approach to fictional crime, he wrote: "The blunt instrument, the gang murder, the paid assassin has always seemed to me positively indelicate. Murder is a fine art and needs the embellishment of a sophisticated imagination. The true aficionado prefers to have his nerves ruffled by the implied thread--the Borgias rather than the Syndicate. What is more delightful than a domestic crime, when it is executed with subtlety and imagination? I leave to other more pedestrian talents materials based on newspaper accounts. True crimes, ugh! Alas, most of them are dull and give no evidence of the careful planning and loving thought that should go into any human activity as rewarding as murder." 500pp.

Langland to Wither #171 (Grolier Club). Wing 5266. According to Pforzheimer #189 [of the 1698 first edition]: "The publication of this book marks a new era in English dramatic literature. Few literary protests have been so completely successful in altering, or at least in giving expression to an impending change in public taste. It was absurdly praised by Johnson and Macaulay." The second volume is: William Congreve. AMENDMENTS OF MR. COLLIER'S FALSE AND IMPERFECT CITATIONS. 1698. London: J[acob]. Tonson. 109pp. First edition, second issue (pp. 43-44 [D6] is a cancel). British Museum General Catalogue 980. Ashley Catalogue IX, p.64 (with title reproduced). Wing 5844. From the Pforzheimer catalogue: " Though a witty and clever defense, even justified from an impartial view, this book failed in its purpose. Congreve was, on the whole, on the wrong side of the argument." Congreve's AMENDMENTS was written in answer to Collier's SHORT VIEW. This copy has Thomas B. Mosher's griffin bookplate (MDCCCXCVII). Also the armorial bookplate of James Heywood. Very Good condition. Only lightly rubbed. A pretty copy, clean, with minimal foxing. Bound in marbled boards with a brown leather spine and corners. 5 raised spine bands. Spine is gilt ruled. SEE PHOTOS. "Thomas Bird Mosher (1852 - 1923) was an American publisher out of Portland, Maine. He is notable for his contributions to the private press movement in the United States, and as a major exponent of the British Pre-Raphaelites and Aesthetes as well as other British Victorians. His book styles reflected those of William Pickering (publisher) and the Whittinghams, the books of the Bodley Head, the Daniel Press, the Eragny Press and Charles Ricketts of the Vale Press, among others. By the end of MosherÂ's publishing program in 1923 there would be 384 titles, 338 reprints of those editions, and 61 Â"privately printedÂ" books for a total of 783 books grouped into fourteen different series, all limited editions, covering his favorite authors including William Morris, Oscar Wilde, Fiona Macleod (William Sharp), Robert Louis Stevenson, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Walter Pater, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Richard Jeffries, Vernon Lee (Violet Paget), Edward FitzGerald, Walt Whitman, Andrew Lang, George Meredith, John Addington Symons, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, Matthew Arnold, Maurice Hewlett, Francis Thompson, Marcel Schwob, J.
