Spine a bit darkened. Light foxing within.** Massachusetts-born Author Robert Welch Herrick (1863-1938) wrote a number of novels around the turn of the twentieth century, while teaching English at the newly formed University of Chicago. His work is often described as American Realist fiction, dealing with fraught, alienated marital relationships, which critics have described as a reaction to the pressures of modern industrialized life. The author's many travels abroad are used as fictional fodder; The story, "A Temporary Infidelity" written in 1897, is set in a series of Italian hotels, and describes the "Boston marriage" of two women, one of whom must see off a male rival for her lover. Author Robert Herrick would eventually change careers, becoming Secretary to the Governor of the United States Virgin Islands. in the 1930's. (Univ. Añadir al carritocloth. Bradley, Will H. Ilustrador. 8vo. cloth. xxiii, 216 pages. First edition. Presentation from the author on the verso of the half-title. Will H. Bradley (1868-1962) is widely regarded as one of the masters of design during the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts periods. His typographic and illustrative work pushed the boundaries of these fields into new directions. In addition, his re-introduction and use of Caslon type brought it back into popularity. The guide includes 261 illustrations, including his designer's marks to help identify his pieces. The guide includes a Book Work section containing three parts: one of 81 definite books of Bradley's own execution, one listing those exhibiting the Bradley stamp but with no confirming documentation, and one listing those using his designs but probably not produced by him. The remaining sections document magazine covers, advertisements, illustrations, posters, and other works.

Still, a very nice and clean example. **Of American artist, printer, book designer and typographer WILL H. BRADLEY (1868-1962), bibliographer Will Ransom said: "There was another man who, like Charles Ricketts, had printing done under his supervision, mostly for commercial purposes but with an occasional book, but who contributed largely to the typographical awakening [of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries,] of the time. Perhaps, under other circumstances, Will Bradley, whose personal work bore the imprint of the Wayside Press, might have done as much creative work in book design as his contemporaries across the sea, for he was, and still is, a designer of marked originality and sound taste." The Wayside Press makes this a Massachusetts imprint, although Bradley would work internationally as well as in Boston and New York. (p. 73). REFS: Bambace, A15. W. Ransom (1929) pp. 73, 445. Starting out with the highest of ideals and a poetic bent, he literally hits the road, rather in Don Quixote style, to wander along the byways of Sussex in search of this mystical dryad, the woman of his dreams. At an inn, he accumulates some personal remnants of a young lady named Sylvia Joy, around whom he builds a fantasy of perfection and devotes himself to finding her. Along the way, though, he happily partakes in some casual affairs, and encounters various couples who begin to temper his Romantic expectations of the perfection of the marital state, in a story with almost Shakespearean levels of coincidence and humor. He will, in the end, find his intended, after a few brushes with some radical modern thinking, and meeting several " New Women" liberated from traditional mores. (In this, the work has been described as a bridge between the Romantic and Decadent movements.) It is a wonderful read, all the more so because written by a "moonstruck" male.**Liverpool-born AUTHOR and poet RICHARD LE GALLIENNE(1866-1947), had a complex personal life, with several marriages as well as an early affair with the writer Oscar Wilde. He was associated with The Rhymers Club, Yeats and would publish books of poetry, biography as well as novels, and contributed to the Yellow Book. His travels took him to New York, France and Monaco. He was also father to celebrated actress Eva Le Gallienne. Massachusetts typographer and graphic designer WILL H. BRADLEY's (1868-1962) work is very collectible. He worked earliest in his career at the University Press, Boston, thereafter at his own Springfield, MA Wayside Press, and later at New York's William E. Rudge. Very reminiscent of the book cover design work of Laurence Housman: See our items Nos. 9729 and 9668 for these cover designs. Some of Bradley's original designs were sold on to be used by other publishers, such as tJohn Lane and The Bodley Head. Bambace p. vii). REF: A. Bambace, "Will H. He was also a diplomat and Viceroy of India from 1876-1880. He was the son of Edward Bulwer-Lytton, conservative politician, and novelist. **"Lucile" has been described as a "verse novel." It was incredibly popular, and from its initial publication in 1860 was reprinted by numerous publishers in over 2,000 editions. Bambace notes other color variants, and a further large paper "deluxe" edition were also produced and advertised by the Frederick Stokes and Co. in Publisher's Weekly in September, 1897. This engagingly written story is about the romantic entanglements of Lucile, Comtesse de Nevers. She writes from mountainous France to a former British lover, Lord Alfred Vargrave, asking for the speedy return of billet deux, having heard of his impending engagement to a Miss Darcy . French ARTIST MADELEINE LEMAIR (1845-1928) was a well-connected contemporary of Marcel Proust whom she welcomed to the luminaries connected with her artistic salons in Paris.
