Author Robert Herrick would eventually change careers, becoming Secretary to the Governor of the United States Virgin Islands. in the 1930's. (Univ. cloth. 8vo. cloth. xxiii, 216 pages. First edition. Presentation from the author on the verso of the half-title. Will H. Bradley (1868-1962) is widely regarded as one of the masters of design during the Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts periods. His typographic and illustrative work pushed the boundaries of these fields into new dir…ections. In addition, his re-introduction and use of Caslon type brought it back into popularity. The guide includes 261 illustrations, including his designer's marks to help identify his pieces. The guide includes a Book Work section containing three parts: one of 81 definite books of Bradley's own execution, one listing those exhibiting the Bradley stamp but with no confirming documentation, and one listing those using his designs but probably not produced by him. The remaining sections document magazine covers, advertisements, illustrations, posters, and other works. Bradley, Will H. (ilustrador).

Hard Cover. Condición: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition. Hard cover, 12mo (5 x 6 1/2 inches), in quarter linen over green-grey illustrated paper covered boards with an art nouveau inspired image of a cloaked woman playing an Irish harp upon a rocky outcropping shaded by a fruited cornucopia of trees, printed in dark grey.… Signed "B" for Will H. Bradley in lower right of illustration. Printed and applied paper label to the spine. Very small vintage bookstore label to inside front cover near gutter. Dedicated to W.B. Yeats. Printed at Will Bradley's The Wayside Press in Springfield, Massachusetts 1897 as on the Bradley designed and printed colophon at rear of publication. WHB also designed the tree art on the illustrated title page, printed in green. Contains fifty-five verses by the multi-talented Irish poet "Æ," or George William Russell (1867-1935): lifelong friend of Yeats, poet, playwright and author, painter, mystic, co-operative farmer's organizer and, later, editor of "The Irish Statesman," a man whom his son described as "having a vast compassion for all men." **CONDITION: Near Fine. Very clean, light wear at tips, small chips missing on spine label. A few spots of very light foxing within. A few pages are over-opened. Still, a very nice and clean example. **Of American artist, printer, book designer and typographer WILL H. BRADLEY (1868-1962), bibliographer Will Ransom said: "There was another man who, like Charles Ricketts, had printing done under his supervision, mostly for commercial purposes but with an occasional book, but who contributed largely to the typographical awakening [of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries,] of the time. Perhaps, under other circumstances, Will Bradley, whose personal work bore the imprint of the Wayside Press, might have done as much creative work in book design as his contemporaries across the sea, for he was, and still is, a designer of marked originality and sound taste." The Wayside Press makes this a Massachusetts imprint, although Bradley would work internationally as well as in Boston and New York. (p. 73). REFS: Bambace, A15. W. Ransom (1929) pp. 73, 445. Please read a wonderful biographical article about the poet written by his son, Diarmuid Russell in the Feb. 1943 issue of "The Atlantic." (AMJ). Will H. Bradley (cover design) (ilustrador). Book.

Bradley in a twining, Art Nouveau depiction of a young woman's face in profile, repeated among twining organic flowering vines to front board and along spine.…Rear board is plain. Printed on laid paper, top edge gilt, other page edges untrimmed. 307pp plus 1897 dated publisher's catalogue in 16pp. Printer's colophon of John Wilson and Son, University Press. **CONDITION: Very Good Plus, with one lightly bumped corner upper right board and one small dent at fore edge board. Head of spine lightly crimped, as seen. Otherwise very lightly age toned, gilt remaining bright. Some bookseller notations in pencil to paste downs. Joints and hinges in order. **This turn of the century "romantic novel" is actually a rather comic and modern satiric take on a thirty-year old English bachelor's belated quest for romantic fulfillment. Starting out with the highest of ideals and a poetic bent, he literally hits the road, rather in Don Quixote style, to wander along the byways of Sussex in search of this mystical dryad, the woman of his dreams. At an inn, he accumulates some personal remnants of a young lady named Sylvia Joy, around whom he builds a fantasy of perfection and devotes himself to finding her. Along the way, though, he happily partakes in some casual affairs, and encounters various couples who begin to temper his Romantic expectations of the perfection of the marital state, in a story with almost Shakespearean levels of coincidence and humor. He will, in the end, find his intended, after a few brushes with some radical modern thinking, and meeting several " New Women" liberated from traditional mores. (In this, the work has been described as a bridge between the Romantic and Decadent movements.) It is a wonderful read, all the more so because written by a "moonstruck" male.**Liverpool-born AUTHOR and poet RICHARD LE GALLIENNE(1866-1947), had a complex personal life, with several marriages as well as an early affair with the writer Oscar Wilde. He was associated with The Rhymers Club, Yeats and would publish books of poetry, biography as well as novels, and contributed to the Yellow Book. His travels took him to New York, France and Monaco. He was also father to celebrated actress Eva Le Gallienne. Massachusetts typographer and graphic designer WILL H. BRADLEY's (1868-1962) work is very collectible. He worked earliest in his career at the University Press, Boston, thereafter at his own Springfield, MA Wayside Press, and later at New York's William E. Rudge. Very reminiscent of the book cover design work of Laurence Housman: See our items Nos. 9729 and 9668 for these cover designs. Some of Bradley's original designs were sold on to be used by other publishers, such as tJohn Lane and The Bodley Head. Bambace p. vii). REF: A. Bambace, "Will H. Bradley: His Work, A Bibliographical Guide," (Oak Knoll, New Castle DE, 1995.) A14. Morris and Levin (2000) No. 70. (AMJ). Will H. Bradley (cover design) (ilustrador). Book.
