Añadir al carritoWalter Thomas was born in Liverpool and attended its College of Art between 191213 followed by two years studying art in London. His focus on maritime subjects culminated in a commission from the Cunard White Star Line who appointed him to paint marine portraits of their great ocean liners which plied the North Atlantic route in… the first half of the twentieth century. These paintings were used particularly to create spectacular posters. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Hard backed sturdy, well-worn album, half bound in calf over red cloth boards. Titled and inscribed to front board in the hand of the artist A Few Examples of Work Designed & Executed by Walter Thomas. The 14 card leaves within burst full of the artist and designer's personal photographs, poster designs, paper cuttings and ephemera. The contents, all pasted in, include: A b/w poster designed for the Southern Railway. Direct Service from London. Southampton. Gateway to the Seas. Pasted to front pastedown. Measuring 25cm x 18cm. 6 small b/w photographs of the artist in his studio alongside his large 16ft picture of the Queen Mary commissioned for the Cunard White Star Line; a b/w reproduction of the 16ft drawing measuring 26.5cm x 20cm; a b/w reproduction of an additional panel in relief for the Queen Mary measuring 27 cm x 15 cm. A b/w poster designed and executed for the French Line (Normandie). Measures 24.5cm x 18cm. A b/w photograph of a large plaster panel designed and executed for the Southern Railway. Dunkirk. 28 b/w photographs of stands and models designed for the Scottish Empire Exhibition 1938 for clients including Alfred Holt and Company, Blue Funnel Line (the world modelled in relief and a design for the Japanese Legation Conference) and the Isle of Man Government (Peel Castle, Villa Marina, Rushden Castle). An interesting collection of newspaper cuttings from circa 1939 highlight the battle for more recognition and status for the 'present day designer' complaining of 'the subordinate position occupied by the average designer in industry'. Chairman of the Liverpool branch of the Society of Industrial Artists MR FJ Price states 'The old masters were not stood over and why should we be. What the artist wants is not only to design, but to control.' Walter Thomas subsequently took over the chairmanship to the society. Añadir al carritoAlbum: 6"x 7-3/4" This lot includes twoÂdiariesÂor journals that were kept during a "Grand Tour" trip toÂEurope from CanadaÂaboard the R.M.S. "Doric" and the S.S. "Albertic". The journals were written by Miss Anita Cronk [from Chicago?]. The first journal, begun July 12th 1929, was kept in aÂleatherÂ"Album", containing ~ 140 pag…es of mss entries. Interspersed among each days entries are photographs, postcards, telegrams, tickets, maps,Âmenus, programs & other interesting ephemeral items that document the trip. At the rear are collected autographs & inscriptions from fellow passengers, as well as a list of hotels frequented during the trip. The second 'journal', of 40 pages written on loose S.S. "Albertic" stationery, documents the trip back home, again with associated ephemera from the trip, again, such asÂprograms, telegrams, tickets, photographs &Âmenus. The first journal starts on July 12th 1929 when Miss Cronk and her friends arrive in Montreal. The ship sailed on 7 a.m. on July 13th and the next 20 pages of the journal document the eight day trip to Ireland. On Monday July 22nd the ship docked in Galway, Ireland. After spending four days in Ireland the ship left for Liverpool, England. After almost seven days in England the ship sails for Brussels. After spending a few days in France Miss Cronk and her friends take a train to Germany were they spend several days and then on to Austria, Italy and back to France. In this interesting journal Anita Cronk records the modes of travel, the hotels, the restaurants, the scenery and the people that she meets and also documents the travels with photographs and postcards and other numerous types of ephemera that are pasted into the album. The second journal starts on August 19th, 1929 is written on White Star Line S.S. "Albertic" stationary andÂdocumentsÂthe trip home. Interspersed among the pages are several "programs" documenting the activitiesÂaboardÂthe ship. There are also some photographs, tickets and menus. Also included with the two journals is the R.M.S. "Doric" passenger list that also includes a map of the journey.  An interesting accounting from this young lady's shipboard activities & continental travel, just before the advent of the crippling 1929 Depression which would severely curtail the number of such journeys. Album's leather spine perished, with covers detached. Poor binding. Text & ephemera - Very Good. "Albertic" stationery - signs of use. Holes from prior attachment. Overall, Very Good. Album a commercial aligator leatherette style.
