George Bell, London, 1904-1905, eight volumes complete; 8vo, 140 x 195mm, about 400 to 500pp per volume plus 6pp publisher adverts at the end of each volume; volume 8 contains a 200pp index to the compmlete set; blue ribbed cloth, spines gilt, top edges gilt; some scattered light foxing and sllight rubbing on the various extremities; volume 1 is worst affected with more rubbing of the extremities, the hinges somewhat loose and the volume itself cocked but the other seven volumes are all in good condition; photogravure portrait of Pepys after the painting by Kneller in the Pepysian Library. . . . This edition, initially published in 10 volumes between 1893 and 1899, is reasonably complete but remains coy about Pepeys's sexual adventures. For the acknowled complete and unexpurgated edition you need to get the editio ppublished between 1970 and 1983 by Bell & Hyman and by the University of California Press. Despite the Victorian reticence the work is a fascinating item to read and gives great insight in ordinary life in the Restoration period. . . . The set weighs approach 4kg but the price shown, together with the default postage cost, will cover carriage within the UK.
