The technique uses a grid system to estimate rainfall at points where measurements aren't taken. It sums the products of measured rainfall and the reciprocal of the squared distance between a point and nearby rain gauges. These rainfall estimates can then be used to calculate the average areal rainfall of a watershed. The book also presents programs to calculate Thiessen weights and to draw isohyetal maps, which are used to depict the spatial distribution of rainfall.
