Even though the globalizing logic of capitalism can be discerned in Southeast Asia, local conditions and cultures determine that capitalism will spread in different ways to its Western origins. This work examines how states may re-tool local cultures to fit capitalism's cultural specificities.

New discourses in modern and contemporary art. The production and circulation of increasingly debordered popular culture. A Regional Contemporary by C. J. W.-L. Wee is an investigative account of the dramatic increase in cultural expression in Asia from 1979 to 2008, with the 1990s as the focal point of this period. The so-called East Asian miracle, Wee argues, projected a fictive but shared contemporary regional identity onto Northeast and Southeast Asia, collectively taken as East Asia. The new cultural explosion was notably enabled by expanded capitalist energies that reached a level critical enough to reposition the region's postcolonial and Cold War-era nationalisms, and this book examines the resulting implications.A sophisticated and compelling study, A Regional Contemporary is the first to examine the conjunction of high and popular culture in the region. Moreover, Wee reveals how the various cultural formations of this regional contemporary were able to traverse-if not overcome-uneven national economies, the memory of Japanese empire, and the geopolitical rifts of post-Cold War nationalisms. While foregrounding new cultural expression, Wee simultaneously examines how novel economic conditions bolstered a more confident questioning of Western modernity's dominance and enhanced the capacity for regional dialogue in the bid to overcome colonial-era legacies-even as those legacies were being absorbed into the region VH1 .VH1 For the designer- if space is tight on the back, this can be deleted. "A senior scholar's comprehensive analysis of the dramatic increase in and impact of cultural expression-enormous art exhibitions and pop culture-in relation to expanded capitalist energy and investment, i.e., the so-called East Asian Miracle"-- Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carrito352 pages, 229mm x 152mm Las Vegas in Singapore looks at the collision of the histories of Singapore and Las Vegas in the form of Marina Bay Sands, one of Singapore?s two Integrated Resorts. The first history begins in colonial Singapore in the 1880s, when British administrators revised gambling laws in response to the political threat posed by Chinese-run gambling syndicates. Following the tracks of these punitive laws and practices, the book moves into the 1960s when the newly independent city-state created a national lottery while criminalizing both organized and petty gambling in the name of nation-building. The second history shifts the focus to corporate Las Vegas in the 1950s when digital technology and corporate management practices found each other on the casino floor. Tracing the emergence of the specialist casino designer, the book reveals how casino development evolved into a highly rationalized spatial template designed to maximize profits. Today an iconic landmark of Singapore, Marina Bay Sands is also an artifact of these two histories, an attempt by Singapore to normalize what was once criminalized in its nationalist history. Lee Kah-Wee argues that the historical project of the control of vice is also about the control of space and capital. The result is an uneven landscape where the legal and moral status of gambling is contingent on where it is located. As the current wave of casino expansion spreads across Asia, he warns that these developments should not be seen as liberalization but instead as a continuation of the project of concentrating power by modern states and corporations. ?This is an innovative project about the development and (place-specific) legalization of casino gaming in Singapore. It is comprised of extensive, well-supported, quality scholarship, which will certainly be of interest to scholars in a variety of academic fields, and to non-specialist local readers in Singapore as well.? ? Timothy A. Simpson, Associate Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau "In this provocative and engaging book, Lee Kah-Wee expands the horizons of postcolonial theories of architecture and urbanism, while providing an exemplary model of situated scholarship that reveals how morality, legality and space are conjoined in the making of Singapore's urban history." ? Greig Crysler, UC Berkeley ?Is the Marina Bay Sands Singapore's mirage of ?progress without crisis?? In a style as postmodern as casino architecture, Lee Kah-Wee highlights how gambling instigates state efforts to shape moral citizens and to position the nation in the world. Viewing the casino as architecture and as model, Las Vegas in Singapore explores the exciting nexus between the taming of chance at the gaming table and the taming of the future in the global marketplace.? ? Aihwa Ong, author of Fungible Life: Experiment in the Asian City of Life (2016).
