Soft cover, 127 pp. Second edition, 2005. In good+ condition. Blue pictorial paper covers have light bumping to edges of covers and light overall scuffing. Preface page has a check mark in blue ink in the margin. Otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. Black and white illustrations. A scholarly and detailed account of the 1868 Battle of the Washita. [from Preface] This book is the comprehensive report on a five - phase project conducted by the Oklahoma Historical Society under contract with the National Park Service. Between 1999 and 2003, staff from the Oklahoma Historical Society and Dr. Loretta Fowler, an anthropologist and private contractor, conducted research on the human occupation of the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site and the association of various peoples with the land over time. Tribes found to be associated with the site and that cooperated during this projectinclude the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes, Apache Tribes of Oklahoma, Caddo Tribe, Chickasaw Nation, Choctaw Nation, Comanche Nation, Kiowa Tribe, and Wichita and Affiliated Tribes. Thepurpose of the project was to collect information that would be used in the development of the site. The researchers also hoped to learn through a series of interviews what the communities in the area, in cluding the Indian communities, think about the site and what meaning it holds for them.

A confederate soldier, pioneer merchant, rancher, newspaper publisher, and town builder, George Washington Grayson also served for six decades as a leader of the Creek Nation. His life paralleled the most tumultuous events in Creek Indian and Oklahoma history, from the aftermath of the Trail of Tears through World War I.As a diplomat representing the Creek people, Grayson worked to shape Indian policy. As a cultural broker, he explained its ramifications to his people. A self-described progressive who advocated English education, constitutional government, and economic development, Grayson also was an Indian nationalist who appreciated traditional values. When the Creeks faced allotment and loss of sovereignty, Grayson sought ways to accommodate change without sacrificing Indian identity.Mary Jane Warde bases her portrait of Grayson on a wealth of primary and secondary sources, including the extensive writings of Grayson himself.
