The author, an American correspondent who witnessed firsthand the Russian Bolshevik revolution, argues that contrary to common belief, revolutionary sentiment was not deeply rooted in America's workforce. While tensions existed due to rapid industrial growth which led to massive wealth creation, even the most radical American labor groups did not align themselves with the Soviets. The author argues that America's unique circumstances, including its decentralized labor landscape and immigrant workforce, along with the early presence of established craft unions, stifled the growth of revolutionary sentiment. He also examines the rise of industrial unionism and the open-shop campaign, arguing that while these movements had the potential to ignite a revolutionary movement, they were ultimately unsuccessful due to a combination of opposition from existing organizations and the American workforce's inherent conservatism. The book concludes by exploring the growth of industrial councils and the trend toward worker representation in company decision-making, suggesting that these efforts may ultimately prove more effective in addressing industrial unrest than radical labor movements.
