Añadir al carritoHalf-Leather. First Edition. First Edition in contemporary green morocco and marbled boards, gilt-ruled spine with floral devices in compartments between the 4 raised hubs, this copy - signed by the author William MacMichael to the dedication page - was the runner-up prize in the then-recently-revived Gold-Headed Cane competition at the UCSF School of Medicine; the competition was revived by William J. Kerr, longtime Chair of Surgery alongside Howard C. Naffzigger; the recipient of the book for the 1943 competition was W. Eugene Stern, student of Naffzigger's (and his eventual son-in-law, as Stern married Naffzigger's daughter Elizabeth) and later founding chief of neurosurgery and chair of surgery at UCLA School of Medicine; there is also a presentation inscription from Kerr to the first white page where he praises Stern for showing "to an unusual degree the qualities of the true physician" and presents the book to him as "first Honorable Mention for the award" and dated it October 23, 1943; Stern has added a note below the inscription identifying the recipient of "the actual gold-headed cane" for that year; the boards in nice shape, binding tight pages bright, marbled endpapers & page block edges, little to no foxing to pages or to the many attractive woodcuts found throughout, the leather is a bit rubbed & scuffed at pressure points, boards lightly rubbed with quiet soil & toning, the former owner's signature (physician Everard Augustus Brande, 1776-1868, apothecary to George III & who later served William IV) to title page and his tasteful bookplate to front pastedown, contemporary marginalia added to page 169 - most likely by Brande - noting the date of death of Baillie, the last of the five physicians in the succession of ownership of the original gold-headed cane, whose wife donated it to the New College of Physicians upon his demise; an overall very nice copy of the First Edition, a one-of-a-kind association copy involving a multi-generational lineage of notable physicians (Brande, Kerr, Naffzigger, Stern) and uniquely signed by the "editor" and "ghost writer" for the cane, William MacMichael; sm 8vo; (12) 179 (1)pp illus. Signed by Author.
